1. Passport - to get into the country.

2. If you are doing any driving, you will need an international driver's permit.

3. Money (Credit cards, Traveler's Cheques, and/or American cash).

4. Plenty of maps, or a really, really good atlas.

5. A train ticket if you are traveling by train.

6. A bus pass if you want to get around the city you are in by bus.

If you're going to be driving, you need an acceptable driver's license. If you're in the united states, and just want to travel from state to state, you don't need any sort of documents except whatever you used to get into the country.

I travelled around the US for nearly ten years. All I had was a van,
and a willingness to work. I would stay in various towns and
find jobs through various employment
agencies. Often times I got asked to stay longer, but I rarely
stayed more than 3 months, and left for some place new.
Serial killers have to stay on the move.

If you're an American citizen, a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, should suffice. If you were born in America but aren't black or white, you might consider bringing a copy of your birth certificate too (sad but true, you can be detained if your citizenship can't be confirmed).
