I've never been in Detroit, so I am not really qualified to comment. I did drive near it on my way to Chicago, though.

Detroit has a terrible reputation: ugly, dirty, filthy, crime infested, unsafe, etc. I was once deeply moved by an article about gangs of kids starting fires every year throughout the city on the night before Hollowe'en ... which they call 'Mischief Night' or 'Devil's Night'. It gave me the impression that Detroit must be the worst, if not one of the worst cities in America.

PENDRAGON
People think it sucks because of unreliable stats that are often posted by some biased journalist.

Also, other forms of the media will only broadcast the negative news about Detroit nation wide, so people who never even been in Michigan often already have a prejudged decision about Detroit because they actually believe the media is always a credible source of information.

All the good things about Detroit are pretty much kept a secret by the media, and is never advertised to the outside world beyond the suburbs.

EDIT: The main reason why people are rapidly leaving Detroit is because of job loss, lack of jobs, and high taxes. And as for why houses are only going for "20K" is because pretty much any house in Michigan right now is going for a lot less than what they're worth, due to the increased number of homes up for sale, and a major decrease in the number of consumers who want to invest their incomes into a new home. Aside from that, a lot of houses in Detroit were always pretty cheap because of low property value, but on the other hand, not every place that has little property value is a "dump hole", yes Detroit does have some "dump hole" areas, but not every detailed part of the city is a freaking "dump hole", you just need to research and look at the good and bad of Detroit to really know the true character of the city.

You have obviously never been anywhere else.
Last time I drove through Detroit, every third building looked vacant, and even downtown was like that. Your city is a disaster. The car companies are suffering so Detroit is going to be in poverty for a long time. I don't see the gas prices getting cheaper, so car sales are going to slump for years to come.

I was born in a house on the corner of 8 Mile and Monica in 1928. My family moved to Highland Park in 1932 and I lived there until I moved to Los Angeles in 1950. In 2000 I made a trip to Detroit to visit my brother and he drove me to see our old house on Monica...it was gone, but the one in Highland Park was still there and looked pretty nice. However, the rest of the houses, that had not been burned, looked like they were in a war zone. There were bath tubs, sinks, toilets and piles of burned rubble everywhere...about every third house. Nobody cleaned up the messes! Our little city and our lovely street had been turned into a ghetto. What kind of people did this? And why did they do this? I guess you can "go home again", but sometimes you really shouldn't. I never will again. It was just too sad.....

im from detroit, i live in the suburbs of detroit. detroit city actually is kinda dangerous cuz there are a lot of crimes going on over there cuz there were riots between black and white people in the past, which caused problems with the mayors and stuff so detroit city never had a good leader to fix it up. but besides that theres nothing really wrong here, we may not be a good vacation spot (the UP is better in that case, nothin to see down here really) but detroits an ok place, people say that cuz compared to places like cali and chicago detroit isnt so hot, like the downtown everything there is messed up. detroit city really isnt a nice place anymore, but for living here, if your from the suburbs there its not really that bad- though michigan does have a bad economy. but this place is my home, i was born and lived here my whole life thats why i love it.

Me
I live in detroit too. People probally say Detroit sucks because of the broken down buildings and homes, the graffitti, and some of the people who roam the streets.

<3..
Detroit was really nice back in the day. I had moved to Detroit from NY about 12 years ago, stayed for about 2 years and moved back to NY. The houses were beautiful, the neighborhoods were nice, buildings were up & running and even Belle Isle was a great place to spend the day with family. I recently moved back to the Metro Area this past year & I was surprised to see how much it's changed. Businesses are abandoned, houses are abandoned, the neighborhoods are looking ghetto, crime is high and there's really nothing left in Detroit to visit. It is so sad to say but I think Black people made it this way because they don't care. & it makes the rest of us black folks look bad. Big cities have good & back all over but I don't see any good in Detroit. The major needs to stop worrying about texting, parties and buying cars & put that money towards fixing up the city. Who voted his *** in anyway.. he hasn't done anything to help it.

If Detroit isn't so bad, then why can you buy 3,000 s.f. homes for $20K? People aren't moving INTO Detroit, they're moving OUT. Detroit's population has been nosediving for decades. A lot of people here who claim to be from Detroit are really from the Detroit AREA. Most of them are in Oakland or Macomb Counties.

Detroit has the distinction of being #1 for a lot of social and criminal problems, but in all fairness, there are a few cities that run a very close #2 spot. Still, being at the top, or near the top, of the list for being a #1 dump hole is not really a blue ribbon award for a great place to live.

Detroit is a city that has forgotten its past. As people moved away its never tried to recapture them. All you hear about Detroit is crime. They need to turn that around and change peoples attitude about the city. Its a great city but needs a little work. Not just on the outside but also on the inside.

Hales
Well obviously bigger cities are going to have more crime, more homeless people, and more problems.

However, I think Detroit is a pretty awesome city. I live in Lansing, and I have a friend whose parents live in Dearborn, and we like to go over to Detroit and spend the day taking pictures and walking around, enjoying the city.

I think many people are just scared of the ghetto parts of Detroit, but it's just like any other ghetto...

Personally, I enjoy Detroit. It only "sucks" as much as every other big city.

I thought they said that about Freaky Chris.

Seariously though we deserve a lot of the bad press we get. We have always been a tough town. There is an old legend in Detroit that goes back into the Colonial days, about a Red Devil, a Red Dwarf or in French the "Nain Rouge".

The Nain Rouge has brought episodes of pestillance, fire and general chaos throughout our 300 year history. The moral of the story is that we didn't treat the Nain Rouge well, so it comes back to get its revenge.

That's why we have a Vistor's and Convention Office.

Now i'm not from Detroit nor having even set foot in USA (i'm from across the pond in England) but I think Detroit is quite an underrated city.

Sure it has a 'ghetto' and about 85% of the population of the city of Detroit are black but so what!? If your into photography (like I am) there are lots of photo opportunities of the abandoned parts and downtown Detroit with an impressive skyline when seen at night,
and the black people - I don't care what colour they are, i'm an open minded person and i won't hassle them if they don't hassle me, besides your not likely to get into trouble with the people unless you are trying to draw attention to yourself.

Referring back to Detroit being underrated, what I can't get my head around is why has a city that has given the world so much (cars , music , help during WW2 etc) hardly gets a "thank you Detroit", instead it's like an old person left on their deathbed with no sympathy being given.

Why does Bush spend so much money on bombs when it could help build the city of Detroit up and "rise up from the ashes" ? I mean it helped New Orleans, now lets do the same for Detroit.
