If you are interested in architecture at all, you have to go out to Oak Park and visit the Frank Lloyd Wright home/studio. Some great examples of his work in that town..It is a first ring suburb of Chicago, and accessible by the L.
Also, you must go to a restaurant, I think it is called Ed Debevric's |

The Sears Tower. You can see part of Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconson from up there. |

If you get hungry and I know you will go to the Billy Goat Tavern at least once their hamburgers are the best. The original is on 430 N Michigan Ave. but if you are near the LaSalle St. train station or at Navy Pier (also a cool place to visit - lots of cruises) there are locations there as well. There are also the wonderful museums and the Shed Aquarium (that one is a little pricy but cool) The King Tut is exhibit is going on right now as well. There is so much to do oh and there is all the ethnic towns hop on the red line, there are maps on the wall and at the entrances, go south bound and it will take you to China Town lots of cool stuff. So much I could keep going on. It is all just a matter of what you like to do. |

Forget the touristy stuff. Don't miss things that are truly Chicago originals.
The poetry slam at the Green Mill on Sunday nights. or for that matter any of the Jazz that is played at the Mill the rest of the week.
The club soccer matches in north end of Grant Park near Montrose. They usually play on Saturday and Sunday all day long.
Dog Beach. It's a little clump of sand on the lakefront bike path near Irving park. but it's kinda fun to watch the dogs act like idiots.
Real chicago softball. There are a bunch of places where they play real Chicago softball, 16-inch and none of those sissy gloves. Try the south end of Grant Park near the Field Museum, Wicker park in, well, Wicker Park. or ask around. The teams usually play on Saturday afternoons. Pick a team to root for and go crazy.
Walk down Devon ave. It's a street on the far north side of Chicago that goes east and west, but when you get west past Clark street, it's like entering about three different worlds. One section is heavily Indian and Pakistani. There are sari shops (saris are those Indian dresses that women wrap around themselves), Indian grocery stores and about 5 million Indian restaurants that all smell great. I recommend one called Tiffin. It has a buffet on Saturday afternoon and the tandoori chicken is great. After that you hit a section of Devon that is heavily Jewish. A few Jewish delis and jewish bakeries that sell these great pastries that I forget the name of right now.
Street fair: In the summer there is ALWAYS a street fair going on somewhere. When you get here, grab a copy of the Sun Times weekend section or the Chicago Reader (a free weekly newspaper). There's usually an ad for whatever four or five street fairs are going on that weekend. usually they charge about $5 to get in, but sometimes it's worth it.
Go jogging or bike riding on the bike path near Lake Shore drive. Yes, it's crowded as heck on the weekends and there have been a few bike-rollerblader-runner collisions, but if you watch where you're going it's great people watching and sightseeing. You can riride down to Navy Pier, get something to eat and ride back. You can rent bikes too. Check the Chicago park district web site |

I live 20 minutes from Chicago. I suggest you do not miss Millennium Park, (movie clip of faces) on water monuments. (you can even walk through the water.) "The Bean" you can not miss. The Art Institute of Chicago is free on Thursdays and Fridays! Call: 1-888-301-9612
for hours. Some special exhibits are for a fee.
Pizza at Gino's East is a must!!
Carriage ride from Water Tower Place, Shops at Navy Pier, Water Tower, Observation deck at John Hancock Center and cheesecake at Cheesecake Factory!! Travel North to 1060 W. Addison St. for a Cubs Game. Travel South to 35th & Dan Ryan Expwy for Sox Game. Oh, if you like the beach, go to North Ave. Beach. Sing Karaoke upstairs in the restaurant Grill there! You are not far from Lincoln Park Zoo. It is free all year round. Parking there is a fee if no paralell parking is available. Ride the pedal boats to take in the sky line from Lincoln Park zoo.
Hope this helps. :-) |
