What impression do you have of Texas? Why are people so proud to be from Texas?

I really don't understand what the big deal is about Texas. It is dry, flat, ugly and has the fattest people!!! It is too big and doesn't have enough nightclubs or entertaining things to do. So why the pride about Texas? Especially Houston.

Texas has mountains, coast, forests and plains and we respect the beauty of all of it. We fought for our independance. We work hard for our money and love our families and God. I think you might be wrong saying that all people in Texas are fat.

to the beat in my head
well for one thing pride for your state should never come from night clubs. Texas has been by itself a nation in the past. It is the only state flag I know of that is allowed to fly at equal height to the U.S. flag. As for texas being dry and flat: Texas probably has the most diversity of any state in the nation. It has coast lines, large rivers, mountains, deserts, hills, plains, large and expansive caverns, etc. As for fat and ugly, yes texas has a reputation for having one of the highest percentages of obesity, however, the university of Texas and Texas Tech University have been voted by college students as the first and second ranking schools for hot youths. As for the night life, Austin is considered to have one of the best in the nation. I could keep going into all of the pride that came from revolutions, the alamo, etc. but i'm sure you already knew and considered all of these things. People stereotype far too much. People don't walk around with guns and sport rusty cars in their front yards. Only in the ghettos, which every state unfortunately sports their fair share of. I consider no one to be better or worse because of where they are from. Every state has their stereotypes and they are usually wrong and outdated. Where I grew up(Spring Branch in Texas), and I am only 19, manners were strongly stressed, the country was and still is beautiful and hilly with countless trees. The nightlife was great (15 minutes from San Antonio, 45 from Austin), the girls were and still are beautiful(with guys having to look good to win them over), and mostly everyone was friendly and willing to help

I fell in love once, maybe twice, with a girl from Lubbock, years ago. I have loved Texas ever since.

I'm originally from Puerto Rico, but I moved to Texas on a whim about 6 yrs ago. I've loved it ever since I got off the plane. The people are nice, the food is great, and the scenes in the major cities are really good. Htown is just one of those places, that if you're from there, you just have to rep where you stay at. About it not having clubs? where did you go? more than likely it wasn't a big city. Austin's 6th street is the mecca of live music, Houston is full of night life fun, as well as San Antonio and Dallas.

one word: ASTROS.

Well, I am a proud Texan. The state does have dry and flat areas, esp. in the pan handle of the state; however, there are beautiful areas within the state's borders.

The "Big Thicket," which is located in the Eastern portion of the state offers many wooded state parks and lakes. Outdoorsmen: fishers and a hunters paradise!

The "Hill Country" near Austin, which is the state capital is simply serene, with breathe taking views of rolling valleys and running waterways.

The lower stretch of the Rocky Mountains are located in the western portion of state, once again the Big Bend State Park, is a visitor hot spot--a can't miss if you visit the state.

Then there are the beaches of Galeston and especially South Padre Island, some of the best beaches of the United States.

If you want to do anything recreational, it can be done within the state. Plus, both the cities of Austin (Sixth Street), San Antonio (Riverwalk), Dallas and Houston (Richmond strip) offer many adult nightime entertainment opportunities.

Don't sell this state short! Visit once and you will return!

Why are we so proud? Anything you want to can be found in Texas!

Houston? You have pro sports, nightclubs, upscale dining, downtown improvements and urban development, museums/ monuments/ a battelship and submarines open to the public, a large city zoo, waterparks and amusement parks, the beach is within an hour, fresh water lakes within 30 minutes, commerce/one of the worlds largest ports; what else do you wish to know?

The history of Texas is fascinating. I'm originally from California and when my husband and I moved to texas about 5 years ago, I fell in love with scenery. It's very green where we are. The people that I have met have always been very nice and hospitable. I think the people here are proud of the history of this state, there is so much here from The Alamo to NASA.

If there is a complaint about living here in Houston, it is the fact that it is WAY TOO HOT here in the summertime.

That is the only state that flies their state flag higher than the American Flag. Who knows? They just love their state.

well, im from Texas. I'll tell you why. go south, there is the gulf, beaches babes, fun. Go east, mountains, desert, totally different. Go to the center, hills woodlands, rich hippies, green, Austin!!! Go north, snow, trees, no humidity. And as for houston, I dont like houston. Im not fat. No one in my family is. You should go to Austin for nite clubs and fun..houston sucks! Texas has different climates and different people, and no state income tax.

Maybe you're just jealous that most of the multi-billionaire tycoons are from TEXAS!!
I myself was born and raised in the Valley of Texas, and now that I reside fulltime in Wisconsin... It is my pleasure to say that I am Texan and that weighing 135 at 5'5 with the georgeous eyes that my mom gave me... I DON'T think all Texans are Fat!!!
Maybe where you live you're surrounded by lard, not just Texas.
So open your eyes honey because we look good & most of the girls down there are very, very beautiful!!!

Dry- really? Do you have lakes, an ocean, rivers where you live? Flat - never been to the Davis Mountains, I guess! Ugly - apparently you've never been to Texas!!!!!!!! ...and since when has a locale been judged on their nightclubs. Let's see, we have operas, Broadway shows tour in Dallas and Houston each year, art museums, NASA, cultural centers, Six Flags, water parks, Canton First Monday...sorry too numerous to mention. Just jealous, aren't ya!

An aside: We CAN'T fly our flag HIGHER - just AS high, since it was formerly the flag of a country/republic itself!

Are you kidding!!!? I went to boot camp at Fort Knox and every time I'd tell someone I was from Houston, Texas, EVERYBODY, no matter what coast they were from ALWAYS said Houston and Austin have the best night clubs they'd EVER been to. And besides... Texas is the only state that has citizen pride as big as American pride. You are very prejudiced if you think the whole state has the fattest people. You are wrong. You are talking about Houston, and that was years back. The place with the fattest people is actually in France. And Texas is so big that you are also VERY misinformed if you think it's all dry, flat or even ugly!!! The soutwest is a dry but lively desert, the north has some of the nicest mountain ranges and cooler weather, the north is a hustle and bustle of business, the east is VERY green and luscious, and the south west in hot and humid with Houston as a very succesful but often overlooked place full of hundreds of cultures form more countries than you can imagine!!! The history of Texas is so rich that we are the ONLY state that dedicates a subject to the State and it's history and government in middle, high school AND colleges and universities!!! Who else can say that? I lived in California for a few months in high school and EVERY freakin person had such a misconception that all Texans were raised in dirty ranches and had to milk cow in the morning before going to school... It's shocking how so many people are so isolated into their own judgemental ideas of what the rest of the world is like... You can't criticize what you'll never understand. Also, Texa is the ONLY state in the entire country that can secede if it wants to and be it's own country with seven states. It won't happen because we are just as proud to be Americans!!! I am originally from Mexico and I love Texas so much that I became a resident and now citizen of the United States (all legal so don't freak out!!!) I've been all around the country and the only true hospitality and valued friendships I have found to be genuine were and still are in Texas... Everyone and everything is so passionate!!! I am proud to be a Mexican by birth, an American by law, and a Texas by the grace of God!!! Go all over the state, not just tourist places if you really want to see what we have to offer!!! Best Wishes and I hope you find a place to live that is as loving of it's residents as they are of their homes, family, and fellow neighbors!!!

I'm from TEXAS and proud of it! We are boastful cuz this great state is diverse....haven't you ever heard of the slogan "Texas....it's like a whole other country"... that's us....all summed up in one phrase.

sangocuttie29
i from Texas and u say one more word u ***** and ill do something a i sure as hell wont regret trust me. Texas is awesome and its not flat we got hills *****! anyway ppl here r not fat u want to know how i know? because im not fat u idiot!!!! i dont even weigh 100 ******* pounds!!!!!! anyway its not ugly have u ever seen the stars out here in the country side? its breath taking! so what if we dont have night clubs or whatever at least we got pride. we fought at the Alamo and alot of other battles so go **** urself u whore because Texas is the best and there is nothin u can do about it.

2muchcoffee
Have you ever been to East Texas or how about central Texas in the hill country---The thing is Texas is diverse----it has deserts, mountians, wetlands, flat lands and everything in between. And if you can't find enough night clubs in Houston---then your not looking very hard. If you don't like Texas then move....Texas is a great place to visit and to live---there are plenty of things to do.

browneyedgirl
Why all this hostility?? Did Sam Houston p*ss on your Wheaties this morning?

First, if you think Texas is dry, flat and ugly you've obviously never been to New Mexico. We have a coast, hills, mountains and beautiful trees... you just have to know where to find them.

Second, there are fat people everywhere so get over it. And all of my friends from out of state say Texas has more beautiful women than anywhere else in the states.

Third, it's not big, it's HUGE. There's tons of stuff to do! Again, you have to know where to find it. Besides, who needs a nightclub on every corner? Drunk people peeing in the streets and screaming at each other... who needs that??

Oh, Houston is not the greatest city on the planet. Can't dispute that. But I can think of worse places to be...

We're proud because we fought to be part of the United States and we won. We love our state and our country. If you don't like it, get your Yankee @ss out.

Texas is beautiful if you see the ocean, but Houston has too much crime.

Teit, I think I can sympathize with you, but if you have an open mind, I think you could come to change it. I hated Texas for the first three years or so I lived here and have now been here for 16 total years. I rebelled against liking it to be honest with you. But then I got out and I quit listening to what other people are saying (ie your "fattest people" comment). Are there areas of Texas that are flat, dry and ugly? You bet! But we are huge here and just so happen to have nearly every terrain you can think of, somewhere in the state. To find a good beach you practically have to leave the country (South Padre Island) but hey, it's still here.

I don't really like Houston either (lived here 8 years) or at least compared to Dallas or Austin, but I can dig it.

I use to hate the slogan, "Don't mess with Texas". What a conceded statement!! But then as I got older I started to think I wanted to move, but that the only reason I wanted to move was the weather. I always say, I would go anywhere if I could take the people of Texas with me. I love the people here and their attitude. That "mess with Texas" slogan isn't conceded, its respect for the land and the people that live here, probably the same values you and your family hold dear. Kind of like the old golden rule. Think how many other states in this union really, truly have an identity anymore and you won't find too many.

I don't want to sway your opinion, but instead to see if you could try again. Go to Austin, which to me is the most beautiful city in Texas with some great things to do. Living there would cost a lot, but its a great place to visit. After that, living and working in Houston or Dallas (about 9 million people combined) is easy, with lots of jobs and a cost of living that enables more people to live good lives.

I think people are proud to be from Texas because of the Alamo and all that.

smokingun
The problem with Texas is that the people there don't understand the difference between "bigger" and "better." That and they are really preoccupied with individual freedoms, so much so that they have nothing but contempt for any governing body... yet, oddly enough, they claim to be patriotic.

In my experience, people who don't fit this stereotype of Texas get sick of it and leave... I'm basing this on the Texans I've met in Texas, not the "Texans" I've met abroad.

I don't know a lot about Texas, but I've met some people from there, and I know of some celeb's and presidents etc from there. It seems to me to be a place of the have's and the have not's. Like if you live in Texas you are either really rich and famous or really dirt poor and uneducated.

Jeremiah
You're darn right. Texas sucks - especially Houston. I have lived in TX for like 8 years, and it still blows. The pride is just like how a redneck is proud of his rusty crap car in the front yard on cinder blocks - they have no idea what pride should be because they've never had anything they could rightfully be proud of. I am going to make a bumper sticker that says: I WASN'T BORN IN TEXAS - AND I'M LEAVING AS SOON AS I CAN!

A
it is dry fat and ugly and i dont like mentality of the people who live there.
they are all losers they think they rock and are beautiful and all of em are like christians
and republicans ewwthanks bye.
