If you want to stay fairly close to Los Angeles, try ZUMA BEACH. Baywatch was filmed there and immediately adjacent to there -- this will give you an idea of what it looks like -- clean, pleasant, everyone sunbathing, no crazy ferris wheels and such.

Newport Beach is always clean and close to shops, restrooms, and showers.

It depends what you want to do at the beach. Hermosa Beach is my favorite because it is very pretty, it is good for surfing, and it has a nice bike/walking path, + a pier. A lot of things have been filmed at hermosa beach, including scenes from Jackass (some of the cast members reside in Hermosa Beach), The O.C., & Beverly Hills 90210. Huntington Beach is pretty cool too, but it draws a different crowd of people. Hermosa Beach has a more laid-back feel to it. Also near Hermosa Beach are Redondo and Manhattan Beaches, also very nice. Just North of Manhattan Beach is Dockweiler Beach, where you can take advantage of the bonfire pits on the sand. And for camping on the beach, try Leo Carillo Beach North of Santa Monica :)

Any of the beaches in Northern California are clean and in the summer, they are popular, but not over crowded like some in LA. I would recommend any on the Sonoma/Mendocino coast line.

well it depends, so cal or nor cal? i live in so cal and i prefer huntington beach. more of the nicer beaches is laguna, but there are so many tourists there, its not even worth going, unless u go to one of the beaches where there are VERY few people.

Try the Hermosa/Redondo area, especially if you're going Memorial Day Weekend. They have a huge arts festival that's a lot of fun.

I would recommend Venice Beach, beautiful. Plus there are lots of shops, restaurants, and things to do. Also, it's the famous "muscle beach", there is a weight lifting area on the boardwalk.

Huntington is nice when it come to a clean beach and very popular during the summe, Laguna is also very cool with it's cliffs huge waves and cear water but if you want a atmophere Venice would be the way to go with it clear blue water and shops, and freaks... Awesome!
