What is it like living in chicago???? |
I am british and have wanted to live in chicago for ages. I am fourteen at the moment and when my sister and brother move out ( in next 3 months or so ) we are going to go on holiday to Chicago and if we like it we will try and move their. I obviosley know that a holiday cannot make up your mind about things and that, but i'd thought i'de see if their were any poeople who could tell me about what its like living there. We want to live in the city, not the suburbs and i am more into the rock, punk heavy metal scene so would also like to know about that please???? I have read many reviews stating that Chicago is known for jazz:P:P Bubbles36 xox |

I love chicago, i have lived here while going to school for the past 3.5 years. The architecture is second to none in this city, it is widely considered the architectural capital of the world. There is pretty much everything you can imagine here, and then a WHOLE lot more that you wouldn't imagine.
Something i really like is the public transportation. If you do live in the city, public transpo is the way to go.
As far as the music you are into, there a number of venues that constantly have shows of all sorts, such as the House of Blues and the Metro.... yes chicago is known for jazz, and there are still some good jazz places around.
Oh yeah, and the Lake is an awesome feature. Beaches in the summer, park system all along the lakefront.
If you don't like cold winters and hot summers, dont live here because that is what you'll get. Personally i like the balance because usually near the end of summer i want it to be cool/winter, and then after a few months of winter i'm ready for summer to come back around. |

Here at Chicago, it's not bad, but one disadvantage is at the real Chicago it's hard to own and have full living space. For example, since it is so cluttered here. you will probably end up renting in 2-room apartment. There are some nice skyscraping apartment buildings, but they cost too much $.
there are many sites to see like:
Navy Pier
W Hotel
Sears Tower
Field Museum
Shedd Aquarium
Adler Planetarium
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Wrigley Field(not that i'm a cubs fan or anything!)
Art institute of Chicago
Museum of Science and Industry
The IMAX theater in Navy pier
John Hancock Center
Millennium Park
American Girl Place
You should of came when the AUTO SHOW was in town!!
Magnificent Mile
Chinatown
Gold Coast
U.S. cellular field (yes i am a sox fan!)
Toyota Park, just built and is home to the Chicago Fire
One more thing is that it is freezing in the winter, though the summers are satisfying and you can take a swim at Lake Michigan any time you want to. If you really like shopping. You can just go ahead to the MAGNIFICENT MILE. Chicago is a very big city. Go on the Sears tower and take the stairs you're doing exercise and about to see one of the biggest skyscrapers in the world, when you are on the sears tower on the top floor you can see almost everything! Take it from me, you should come here sometime!!! It's awesome here!!! The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is a great way to support the arts. The IMAX theater is nothing you ever imagined!! Mostly no natural disasters happen here at all. So you can stop worrying about hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes, cause here we have no natural disasters at all.
Also, the most popular type of music in Chicago is rap =(
I don't like rap take a look at my profile to see what music i'm crazy about! |

Chicago is known for Jazz, it's known for the Blues. The spectacular Skyline, The Cubs, the White Sox, Michael Jordan. The Smashing Pumpkins, R. Kelly Chaka Khan and Twista. We are the city of Big Shoulders and we're also know as the Windy City. You haven't had a hot dog until you've had a Maxwell Street hot dog, you haven't had pizza until you've had father & Son piza or Home Run Inn Pizza also White Castle.Michigan Avenue is where the sites are State street is where the sites used to be. You have to visit the Taste of Chicago, Navy Pier and Millenium park.
It can be expensive to live here but being from Great Britian, it might not be for you.
and that's just some of the good parts of Chicago. |

Oh it's freezing cold all year round, and there are mobsters running around with violin cases machine gunning each other!
Seriously it's the best city in the US. It's got everything you could ever want to do, see, or buy. It doesn't have LA's traffic and smog, or plastic people. It's not as crazy as New York City. You can survive here. We've got great sports, great parties in the spring and summer, and who knows, maybe the Olympics if we play our cards right.
Chicago has great music, the blues is probably #1, but lots of everything else, all you have to do is look for it. Here's a good link for checking out the local music scene:

Living in Chicago is fun, there are lots of opportunities for work and even more places to visit.
The "L" train system, as well as Metra, and the city buses, are extensive and can take you anywhere you need to go.
Jazz is definitely a big part of Chicago, but so is any other type of music (look into a Heavy Metal band called "Tremulus").
Punk style in Chicago may not be regarded by some as hard-core as those from New York, but it is here, accepted, and tolerated. Midwesterners are good people, and are nice, so you can easily express yourself. Music and theater are big here.
The city is clean, well organized, offers many beaches, a river that winds through the city, cool underground streets called (Lower Wacker Drive), shopping (The Magnificent Mile) and good suburbs (for those who need to escape).
There is a *lot* to do here.
You will have a great time, and if you move here, the universities are great and some are tops in the nation for many areas of study. |

It's like London only not as smashed together. Chicago is pretty spread out. It's a big city with lots of things to do. There's a lakefront, parks, etc. It can get very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. But when the weather is mild, it's GREAT. Street fairs, city festivals, outdoor concerts, etc. It has a very mixed population like London, lots of music venues like London, both clubs and live music. The punk-metal scene is pretty big. Almost all the big name musical acts come to Chicago. Yes, Chicgao is known for jazz (and blues primarily), but with groups like the Smashing Pumpkins leading the way, the city has become known for inventive rock acts in recent years.
if you come in the summer time, you'll LOVE IT. Trust me... |

You should definitely come visit if you get the chance. Maybe, when you are ready to start college, you could even apply to universities in Chicago.
I live here. I was born and raised here. I love every minute of it.
Yes, it gets cold here in the winter. It is NOT cold year-round; that's a ridiculous exaggeration. Yes, you do need a heavy down coat as well as a knit hat and warm gloves for winter. Right now, as I write this, we are experiencing a summer-like thunderstorm. During the day, it was gorgeous -- 80 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny. Our summers can get quite hot.
What I love best, perhaps, is the lakefront. It's great for summer activities. We have beaches and green areas; the city's founders made sure that the lakefront remained public space.
If you live in the city, you'll likely get around via your own two legs (it's a great city for walking) and the CTA. The CTA has a bus system and a rapid-transit system, the latter of which consists mostly of elevated-rail tracks (we simply call it "the el") and subway tracks.
Nightlife here is vast and varied. We've got everything. I think you'll enjoy browsing at this page: www.metromix.com. I use it often when I'm looking for things to do or restaurants and/or bars. Another great resource, if you're visiting or living in Chicago, is the Chicago page on Craigslist.org.
Chicago is a city of neighborhoods. If you get the chance when you come on holiday here, please make an effort to explore some neighborhoods! You will get a greater sense of our ethnic diversity and pride, and your visit will be ten times richer, I promise you. I recommend Uptown (one of the nation's most diverse neighborhoods) and Pilsen (today a Mexican neighborhood). I would avoid Chinatown, which is something of an overdone tourist trap. |
