New York City - that's obvious to me. And not the touristic commercial stuff like Times Square. What's so cool about New York is the sheer vibrancy of the place - the history, the architecture, the arts, the incredible diversity and all the languages spoken, the sheer size, the amazingness that such a huge place functions quite well. If you only have a little time in New York, here are a few things to do: Ride the subway to Grand Central Terminal. Get off the train and walk upstairs to the Great Hall at Grand Central, with the marble columns and the incredible high turquoise ceiling with constellations painted on it, and the huge chandeliers. Go outside, stroll around. Now take a taxi so you can see aboveground. Take the taxi down to City Hall, which also has beautiful architecture and is right next to the Brooklyn Bridge. Take a stroll across the bridge on the pedestrian/bicycle walkway; the view of New York City and the river is one of the most beautiful views in the world; the bridge itself is beautiful and has a great historical plaque at the center. Get coffee and a pastry on the Brooklyn side and walk back. Then take the subway down to the southern tip of Manhattan and either take the tour boat or just the very-cheap Staten Island Ferry out into the harbor for the view of the Statue of Liberty. Then find some good food; if you have a chance go see a musical performance; try to spend more than a day, like a week or a few years. But that's what I'd do -- the Great Hall, and the taxi to City Hall, and the walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, and the ferry for the view of the harbor--to get a proper sense of the place if I were only going to see a glimpse.....

Yosemite National Park is the most spectacular place....the huge granite walls of the large mountains are breathtaking. I think everyone should go there at least once.

Spring is the best time to see the waterfalls, but is also the most crowded time. Fall is great because of the beautiful colors, but the falls have usually stopped. Winter is special....snow covers the ground ad there's a quiet beauty that surrounds you.

17 mile drive that takes you through Monterey Bay, Carmel By the Sea, and Big Sur California. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park has a cove with purple sand, and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park has a beautiful waterfall (see link below). It makes you feel very tiny in the big world, but in a way that make you feel like you have lived.

The Redwood forest & the grand canyon are breath taking.
In life it is NOT how many breaths you take, just how many times your breath is taken away.

MUST--Washington DC. It is our nation's capital. It has many historical sites there. I also believe people should understand their county's history and political situation better. If given the opportunity, go see your respective senator or representative in the House of Representatives.

SHOULD--San Diego. Very beautiful city. Has great beaches and lots to do. It doesn't feel like a big city at all.

Point Lobos

There are many wonderful places, but this gem is little known. It is a small peninsula, just south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. It is the finest meeting of land and sea that I have seen.

If you see it near sunset, it is especially beautiful.

If you see it at high tide with the Pacific waves crashing on the rocks, it is especially wonderful.

If you see it with someone you love, it is especially mememorable.

But if you are lucky enough to be there at sunset, during high tide and you are with someone you love, it's a moment of a lifetime.

i'm from australia but have lived in the USA three times and i think LA or NYC is a must c coz they show how humanity is driving itself to destruction throught polution, human greed, and selfishness.

But u really do need to visit both coasts, as they show different ideologies. the West like LA and San Fran are the shallow superficial side and the east like Boston, Rode Island show the thoughtful, historica,l interlectual side. I know this must sound like a generalisation but this is the impression i get after living in both San Fran and boston, and having visiit other parts like NYC, North Carolina, Reno ect.
