The city of Detroit is an economic disaster and a criminal paradise. City services are lousy. The public schools are horrible. There's very little culture or attractive streetscapes. Pretty much anyone who can leave has already left for the suburbs. |

I am actually kind of curious as to how many people above me here are actually FROM Detroit or how many of them have ever even set foot in Detroit. I LIVE right in downtown Detroit, so let someone who actually KNOWS something about Detroit firsthand answer this question.
Remember back in elementary school, when you had the popular kids and then you had the kids everyone picked on? Ever gone to a reunion? The popular kids are all now trailer park housewives and the unpopular kids are living high on the hog making money hand over fist...more successful than you thought they'd ever be.
You people talk trash about Detroit, but have you looked at the statistics lately? Tourism is up due to Superbowl. More business is being done here due to our auto industry. Our sports teams have won more championships than we have been in a long time (GO WINGS!).
AND....we'll still be standing when the "popular kids" drop off into the ocean during "the big one". End of story. |

It has a bad rep and there are things that definetly need improving just like any other city.Alot of people (probably most) who talk their trash have never even been here.Its so much nicer than even 5 or 10 years ago(downtown).and the neighborhoods right around the downtown area are getting nicer too.and about the murders, ive been many many places and in any city you can watch the news and its the same thing .remember the amish school?crime happens everywhere,people are just ignorant until it happens in their own backyard and it will, because nowhere is immune. |

It never ceases to amaze me how people who either never lived here ,or just heard of a few bad things happen in the city, shoot it down. The truth of the matter is that all the Whites ran when too many blacks started showing up and working side by side with them in factories and other jobs. Soon enough they were moving onto their blocks and living next to them. Thats a no no for those who consider themselves superior. The one thing that really gets me is all the so called religious people who once lived here and left for all the same reasons i stated earlier. Now don't get me wrong we got issues in the Black commmunity and no one denies that, but like any race most people want better and are willing to work towards just that. Ill end in saying yes Detroit has issues but many other cities do as well, if you want to know why this city is like it is just look at the suburbs that surround it. The bum wrap is about the people who live here and thats it (blacks).
You want to see Detroit prosper, then stop hating on us and re-invest, and if you pay close attention to Downtown you'll notice something that even a blind man could see!

Its a pretty sad hollow shell of a once great city.
The only people left are those that don't have the means to leave, and those day-dreamers that think they can single handedly save the city.
All the manufacturing jobs, and their decent means of supporting a family have gone to china and mexico. Thank you Bill Clinton for NAFTA and free trade with China.
People used to put up with the humid, muggy summers and inhumane winters because of the good jobs, but now? Who knows??? There are some pockets of redevelopment, but there arent as many people left, so I think it is just a matter of time before detroit implodes on itself. |

Because its a dump, practically every day you turn on the news, somebody is getting shot, whole families get shot, people inside churches get shot, people abandon cars and garbage in the city, taxes are high, the leaders are corrupt, and unwilling to work with the "suburbs" because they think the suburbs =white people who want to rob detroit of all its jewels that are meant for blacks.
In the mean time, anybody who lives in detroit, black or white or purple, flees to any of the surround suburbs to get decent car insurance rates, and semi-decent schools for their children. |

All the stereotypes about Detroit are true. The city is a wasteland with no hope. The suburbs are good, but not Detroit city. It's a slum. 90% of the people are on welfare or scamming the government some other way. And the government is corrupt too. Even the government is scamming. It's hell, and is like a third world country in Africa. But at least in Africa, there are some people who are willing to still work. Not in Detroit. Detroit has earned everybit of its reputation as a wasteland for criminals, welfare cheats and, did I mention criminals??? You'll be lucky to get out alive if you go there and are the "wrong" type of person. |

It's highly populated, dirty, and impoverished, not to mention has high statistics of crimes. In fact the bridge crossing to Canada is like night and day--Dark dirty dingy Michigan, to a clean and green Canada. Detorit is not a tourist area that's for sure. Many suburb areas are very nice, but to some people saying Detroit means the whole entire lower thumb of Michigan, and to other's it means the inner city of Detroit alone. I got lost in Detroit, taking a wrong turn at night the street was dark, no lights, and people dressed in all black moved forward and back from the sidewalk to cars-probably drug deals--Reminded me of the death eaters you read about in Harry Potter-It was frightening. |

It's a great place to visit in an armored tank and a bullet proof vest. The lines for their attractions are very short. Very exciting town!!! |
