What is so special about Sedona, AZ?

I hear it is connected to spiritual things... because of its unique location, etc. What's so special about it?

The scenery. The spiritual stuff is crap.

It's very beautiful and serene. Lot's of local very old history, primarily American Indian. Alot of beautiful art and old original structures. But it is the land in general and the scenic views that touches your soul. You can actually "feel" your in a very special place, and it has been a special place for a very long time.

Incredible scenery, just the right temperature....did I mention incredible scenery????
The charming Tlaquepaque Art Shopping Center.... don't miss it, even if you are not into Art, the Mexican Village Layout is unique.
Sedona has diverse cultures and interests, it's an artist's sanctuary and a tourist's dream.
Sedona, centrally located and close to the Grand Canyon, also offers premier galleries and shops, upscale Dining, Golf and Tennis.
Also, don't miss Chapel area with the ascetic Chapel of the Holy Cross.
The fiery-hued rock formations you'll find in this area include the famous Bell Rock, with its energy vortex, the wonderful Courthouse Butte and adjacent to the Chapel of the Holy Cross, the stately Two Nuns formation...... and much more ..... and that's why Sedona is so special.

I think mainly for the unique scenery. The large red rocks and some natural falls that are there. Things you will not see anywhere else. There is a place called slippery rock park where it's a long flat waterfall that you can ride like a water tube and cliff dive into the water. It's a great place.

It is beautiful. You have to go there to understand..pictures don't do it justice.
It has natural vortexes. It is very healing, especially if you have been through emotional trauma.

There are vortex's located in Sedona. But in all reality it is a completely unique and beautiful place. It is a great day trip or weekend from Phoenix, you can camp and there are a variety of hikes in the area. The red rocks are breath taking. I highly recommend visiting and you will definitely come back!

Sedona is supposed to be the location of a spiratual vortex. Thats what is special about it. I dont think it has anytihng to do with the terrain ect.

Life after 45
I agree with what "flika" said, it does touch your soul! Also, there is a lot of country to see near Sedona, like Oak Creek Canyon, and Jerome, Flagstaff is only 35-40 minutes North, and of course, the Grand Canyon another 90 minutes North of Flagstaff!

The Northern area of Arizona is incredible, a lot to see in nature, take a lot of film for your camera, or batteries and memory cards for your digital camera, you won't regret it :)

It's peaceful; it's beautiful; it's a tourist trap.

for the record i have been there and it is amazing

Sedona is a city and community that straddles the county line between Coconino and Yavapai counties in the northern Verde Valley region of the U.S. state of Arizona. The population was 10,192 at the 2000 census. Founded in 1902, it has become a gathering place for mystics, who believe some of the earth's energy, as it flows around the rocks is concentrated into power spots some call vortexes. Believers in Vortex Healing believe the Sedona area is the home of several such vortexes.

One of Sedona's main attractions is its stunning array of red sandstone formations, the Red Rocks of Sedona. The formations appear to glow in brilliant orange and red when illuminated by the rising or setting sun. The Red Rocks form a breathtaking backdrop for everything from spiritual pursuits to the myriad of incredible hiking and mountain biking trails.

There are several events that are hosted annually in the Sedona area, including:

Sedona International Film Festival on February 28 to March 4, 2007.
Sedona Marathon will take place on Saturday February 7, 2007
Sedona's renowned Jazz on the Rocks festival at Radisson Poco Diablo on September 21 to September 24, 2006.

Statue of Sedona Schnebly outside the Sedona Public LibraryPolitically, Uptown Sedona (the part in Coconino County) and West Sedona (the Yavapai County portion) form the City of Sedona. Originally founded in 1902, the town was incorporated into a city in January 1988. The Village of Oak Creek, despite its location seven miles to the south and outside Sedona city limits, is a significant part of the community.

Sedona is named after Sedona Miller Schnebly (1877–1950), the wife of the city's first postmaster, who was celebrated for her hospitality, her industriousness, and her commitment to education for people of all ages.

Containment cost was estimated at $6,400,000.[2]

Trivia
In Jamie O'Neal's love ballad, "There Is No Arizona", Jamie belts out the name Sedona in the chorus, "There is no Arizona. No painted desert, no Sedona."
Some of the purported spiritual vortices in the Sedona area are believed to radiate male energy, and others female energy. Such vortices, it is said, can be found all over the planet, but such a concentration is rare. It is believed there are five major vortex areas in Sedona: Bell Rock, Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Boynton Canyon and Schnebly Hill. Many experience uplifting or insightful feelings while meditating at these power points and there is a specialized new age tourist industry in Sedona. Paige Bryant, a well known psychic, was the first to locate vortex areas in Sedona.
Israel Regardie, former secretary and friend of Aleister Crowley and member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn died in Sedona in 1985.
Sedona is home of the world's only McDonald's outlet with non-yellow arches. The arches are instead turquoise.
Inspired by the gorgeous rock formations surrounding the town, music composer Steven Reineke wrote a piece which he named "Sedona".
Tool frontman, Maynard James Keenan, lives in Jerome, 20 miles outside Sedona. He is a partner in a Merkin Vineyards winery in Page Springs, near Sedona.
Sedona is mentioned in the Pixies song, "Havalina," the last song on their album, "Bossanova." The lyrics are: "Walking in the breeze / On the plains of old Sedona / Arizona / Among the trees."

Education
Though in two counties, Coconino County and Yavapai County Sedona is served by the Sedona-Oak Creek Unified School District.

I think its is a beautiful place!!!

AZ Imagined
The cosmic vortices are pagan/spiritual crap conjured up by people who can't seem to accept that the sheer beauty of the area (alone) is what makes it special. Frankly, the nutcases and crystal-freaks running around and preaching (and selling) their newage religions are one of the areas detractions. That and most things in Sedona are very expensive (hotels, shopping, etc)...it's definitely a tourist trap, although a very pretty one.

WillyC
It's a beautiful area situated at the mouth of Oak Creek Canyon & surrounded by huge red sanstone formations.
It is also reputed to be the site of several "vortexes", which as I understand, are spiritual energy centers. Whatever! For this reason, Sedona has become a New Age mecca in recent years.
It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

just visiting
Back in the day it was great.
But now it's overcrowded and overpriced.
We just don't go there anymore.
