What is the best place to take a weekend/week vacation in texas?

If you like the ocean, then your best options are South Padre Island and Galveston. If you want a cleaner beach with long, isolated stretches, then South Padre is for you. Galveston has beaches in the city limits as well as down the island to the south. There's also a wonderful historic city center there with great architecture (Bishop's Palace) and shops. You can't drive on the beach on Galveston Island, but you can take the free ferry northward to Port Bolivar where the beaches are less crowded, and you can drive on them.

If you're not a beach person, you should try San Antonio. You can stay downtown without a car and enjoy the Riverwalk and the Alamo. If you have a car, you can go to the other missions along the Mission Trail (part of the National Park Service). If you like theme parks, you can go to Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Sea World. If you like shopping, there's the Rivercenter Mall downtown with an IMAX theater, NorthStar Mall on the 410 loop, and the new Shops at La Cantera with upscale shopping (Neiman's and Nordstrom). La Cantera is right next to Fiesta Texas on the northwest side of the city. A fun half-day trip from San Antonio would be to go to Fredericksburg, which was settled by Germans and has some fun shops as well as the Admiral Nimitz/Pacific War Museum.

Update: I'm adding this update in response to a post further down... the water park mentioned is in the town of New Braunfels (not new bronzefield!!), which is 30 minutes north of San Antonio. That also makes a good day trip. The name of the park is Schlitterbahn. They pump water from the Comal river, which is cool and clear, for their slides. If you want a more natural experience, drive northwest of New Braunfels to the Guadalupe River and go tubing (there are signs to direct you where to go).

If you are in Texas already and you really like beaches, MAYBE go to Texas Beaches. Texas Beaches are ok, but if you have been to ones in Florida, California, or just about anywhere else you have seen better water. The beaches are OK, but the water is usually very 'dirty' This is from all the silt from the Mississippi and isn't nasty, but it is not clear at all. Ok sorry but I just don't want a beach person thinking they are getting California beaches or something.

New Braunfels with the Gaudelupe and SChlitterbahn is a great fun time.

San Antonio has The Riverwalk, The Alamo (and 4 other historic missions (I have seen all 4, they are all worth a visit)), Sea World, and Fiesta Texas.

Austin has great Night Life, the Longhorn Cavern (huge underground cave in a State Park), and Lake Travis for boating and fishing.

Dallas/Ft Worth has Several Water Parks, Six Flags over Texas, Ft Worth StockYards, Dallas Museum of Fine Art, West End, State FairGrounds, Dallas Aquarium, D/FW Zoo, Texas Rangers Nice new Stadium, and other big city attractions.

Other Areas:
Palo Duro Canyon in the PanHandle region.
Big Bend National Park in the very bottom of the State.
Various other state parks thorughout the state are great, like Dinosaur Valley State park where there are fossilized dinosaur tracks in a river valley. Tons of Lakes to have fun on too.

It depends on where you live in Texas and how far you want to drive. I hear Austin is nice, but if I am able to get to a beach I would. I would go to S. Padre Island or to Galveston. You could take a trip into Mexico if you like.

If we take a week in the summer we divide our time between Austin and San Antonio. Lots of river action.

In Texas- we've got a little bit of everything. We try to see a little bit of everything every year. Of course, the beast beaches to go to here are South Padre Island, and theres also Port Aransas thats off of Mustang Island. Its awesome! For a nice getayway- the Hill Country is the best place. San Antonio is wonderful if you want something a little different and nice. Dallas is good to see a different more developed side of Texas. Its clean, nice, and pretty. We've got everything..

But if I were to choose..Id be tubing on the Guadalupe River..

San Antonio is a good place for the weekend with the River Walk.
Lots to do.....with or without kids.....

For a week -- I'd choose the coast......Corpus or that area around...

Dallas is fun for a weekend with/without kids........Arlington area offers lots!

There is plenty to do in Texas. If I were you I would head down to Houston where you will find plenty to do for a week. Here is a list of some of the places to visit in and around Houston: the Galleria, Memorial City Mall , Katy Mills, Six Flags Splashtown, Schlitterbahn Galveston, the Space Center, Downtown Aquarium, Kemah Boardwalk, the Houston Zoo, Moody Gardens, and San Jacinto Monument. You can also watch a game (Astros, Rockets, Texans, Comets, Dynamo, Aeros), visit museums (the Children's Museum of Houston, Holocaust Museum, the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences), or go dining or clubbing down Weistheimer or Richmond.

I stayed in Austin for a weekend a few years ago on a business trip. It was a nice city and there were plenty of things to keep me interested. If you like to party I have seen very few places that could rival 6th St for a good night out.

I suggest going to west Texas. Alpine is really nice and you could visit the Big Bend National Park. It's very hot in the summertime, but I think it's still worth the trip. The scenery is so beautiful and there's more activities you can do.

Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington - Be careful with six flags, the tickets are $45 per day per person. If you buy the season pass it is almost the same price and it is good for a year. I have been told that if you go to the will call box try to buy an "out of area" season pass they are discounted. There is a water park across the street from six flags. Fort Worth or Arlington might be the place to find a hotel. Dallas is a cool city but it can hard to find a good place to stay that is near all of the other sites in the area.

Austin - I have only been there once; but, I really enjoyed my trip there. You have to eat at a place called Polvo's. They have great Mexican food. It is not far from the UT campus. I don't know the name of the park (someone might be able to clarify this further); but, there is a park in Austin that has a natural spring (or small river) running through it that is nice to swin in. It can easily reach 100+ with high humidity in South Texas, so, cooling off is necessary.

Hill Country - If you decide to go to both Dallas and Austin, take a scenic drive through the Hill Country (stay off the freeway if you have time).
