A woman told me not too long ago at a dinner that the best place to visit in Washington, DC is Julia Child's kitchen at the Smithsonian. I would also recommend U Street and Adams Morgan for culture and gastronimic delights, I agree with Mount Vernon (though in VA), The National Archives to see some of our most treasured documents, 7th Street ("Chinatown"), the Ford's Theatre, the Zoo, The Frederick Douglass Home, Mary McLeod Bethune House, The Woodrow Wilson House...need more?

Caroline In The City
The Kennedy Center
Mount Vernon

You can't get to the White House anymore..parts of Pennsylvania Ave how now been blocked off (post 9-11). BUT It would suggest the following to see

Capital
WWII Memorial
The Smithsonian museum
The Lincoln Memorial
Spy Musuem
Firework on the mall
Georgetown
Riverside dinning by the Potomac

stay away from the bad area of DC (ghetto area)...take metro much easier to get to if needed

There isn't just one best place to visit. DC has a lot to offer.

The White House
The Smithsonian museum
The Lincoln Memorial
The Holocaust Museum
Visit Congress

There are so many places to visit, but one obvious answer is the Jefferson Memorial. I never thought it was much to look at and always preferred the Lincoln Memorial. But in person, the Jefferson Memorial is truly impressive.

But rather than listing places to visit (which many have already done and which can be found online), let me contribute something else: when to go. Do everything in your power to schedule your DC visit to coincide with the Cherry Blossoms, usually in April. This is an amazing time for the capital. The beauty of the blossoms and the monuments and historic buildings and landscapes all complimenting each other is stunning. I do not plan on ever visiting the capital unless it is during the cherry blossom season. It's that much better.

Hope this is helpful!

Personal faves: the gem/mineral gallery in the natural history museum (forget the Hope Diamond at the end--it ain't all that), and the zoo!

A must see is the Holocaust Museum. Very thought provoking and solemn. But I must add, the Korean War and Vietnam War Memorials are very special as well.

all of the smithsonian museums are incredible, but a personal favorite of mine is the national gallery of art and the sculpture garden just outside the west building. there's a big fountain in the middle of it where you can chill, people watch, and stick your feet in the water to cool off.

eastern market is also a must-see. every saturday and sunday starting around 10:00 it's a flea market/farmer's market/craft fair. there's something for everyone! take the metro to the eastern market stop on the blue or orange line.
