I am from Massachusetts and have lived in California for 3 years. I have driven across country 4 times and seen 37 states in the process. I usually hate the arrogance that most Californians display when referring to their own state. However, because your question is vague and seems to refer only to the geographic region known as a state as opposed to its residents, I will have to conclude California.
Reasons: Varied Geographical features: Redwood forests in the north, Sequoia groves in central, Death Valley in the East, relatively sunny and mild southern coastline. The second and seventh largest cities in the US (LA and San Diego). The culture and beauty of San Francisco and the bay area. Not to mention Yosemite National Park and the ski areas of Lake Tahoe.
Cultural melting pot: Large communities of Mexicans, Chinese, Vietnamese and everything in between. Plenty of good old Americana too if that's your flavor.
Conclusion: California may not have the number one ranking in every category, but it ranks in the top 3 for just about everything. No other state comes close. |

This is too easy a question!!!!!!!!!! Arizona is definitely the best!!! There is so much to do out that way. You can drive 2 hours North to Sedona and take a jeep tour into the back country, hang out in Oak Creek Canyon, walk around the town and look at all the artisy stuff. You can go to Prescott and walk through the museums. You can drive up to Apache Junction and go camping, and enjoy the lakes up there and the beautiful scenery. In Phoenix, you can go hiking up Camelback Mountain, visit all the neat malls in town. You can walk through Downtown Scottsdale through all the neat shops. There is a great restaurant in Phoenix called "Rustlers Rooste" and its up at the South Mountain Pointe Resort at the top of the hill!!! You can slide down into the dining room and if you get a window seat, you can look out over the city and the valley below. You can visit Lake Havasu and see London Bridge and enjoy the shopping there next to the bridge. Also, you can rent a houseboat for a couple of days and camp out on the lake. Arizona is definitely the state you want to visit and to live. Im planning to move to Tempe next year!!! |

Eh, as far as government goes I'd have to go with PA, but not on all fronts.
There's too many different ways you can look at the measure of a state to say one is better than another, for example while I prefer PA's government to my own ill-suffered administrations of Jon Corzine, I do prefer living in New Jersey, because I very much like my area, even though the real estate costs 8 times more.
However, if we're to judge a state's quality by the patriotism of it's citizens, then it is undeniable that Texas is the only state where people are quite proud to be texans. I recall living in Texas as a small child, there were people with stepping stones through their gardens in the shape of texas, and you could buy Texas shaped macaroni and cheese. |

Best is really subjective. Some things I would consider:
Most sunshine
Lowest taxes
Safety and low rates of crime
Low cost of living
Fresh air
Peace and quiet
Cultural opportunites
Cool summers with low humidity
... and I really don't know if there is one place that fits all of these criteria well. Maybe Colorado? |

That is easy:
We are more religious, friendlier, patriotic, more mannerly, better cooking and Southern!!
God bless you and the Southern People! |
