The cheapest way is usually to first get to Los Angeles. You can find flights from most major cities in the US to LAX for about $100.00. Book your flight to Honolulu separately depending on which airline is offering the best deal. You can save about 50% on your flight just by finding your own flights by checking the website of each airline for "promos" and also check travelzoo.com for a daily digest of all published airfares. I would still get on the phone where you will get the best deal. Call 1-800-cheap tickets. Yes I know that is too many numbers but it will go through. The Internet is convenient and if you use any of the major travel sites you will pay for the convenience. Other departure cities to check are Seattle and San Francisco, or even Houston, but consider the cost of you getting to one of those cities separately.
On my last trip to Hawaii I flew on Delta first to LAX, $99.00, then got a special on SW going on to Honolulu for $399.00. This was round trip on the last leg but I never used the return portion. The round trip offer was actually cheaper than the one-way.
Added Note- I just checked Hawaiian Airlines as one poster suggested. One way fare departing today is quoted at $176.00 from LAX to HNL. This is an excellent deal. I wasn't even aware that Hawaiian Airlines offered flights from the mainland. |

Hawaiian Airlines is usually the cheapest from the west coast. There are several Hostels in Waikiki for about $20.00 per night as well. |

Cheaptickets.com and sites like that have some good prices that include room and airfare. Check some airlines, I don't know which one but my mom use to fly from Hawaii to the west coast and back on specials that was only $99 for roundtrip. Sorry I don't remember what airline it was. Try Aloha Airlines. Hope you find a great deal to see your loved one. |

SWIM! THen once you're there, live on the street. Its warm there, and lots of people do it.
OK seiously, don't swim....Look for a discount air carrier, and fly standby. Call the carrier and ask about standby and how it works. They'll walk you through it. Basically it means you take your bag to the airport and wait at the gate of the flight to see if there are any seats left, and if there are you get on at a fraction of the normal cost! Pretty sweet deal. |

I use to work for orbitz/cheaptickets.com. Some basic ideas to help keep the cost down of how much you're investing in your flight are:
1. Purchase your tickets early. Usually within 21 days you will get a discount of early purchase.
2. If you do purchase early, make sure that you are in no way going to change this ticket. Delta change fees are usually $50.00 plus any fare increase. American, Uniited Airlines and most other airlines are usually $100.00 plus any fare increase.
3. Don't buy paper tickets. Electronic tickets (or Etkts for short) are much easier and useful for all. They also cost less.
Best of luck. |

no but seriously, check out hotels.com or yahoo travel.. they have some pretty good deals, but your best bet is to schedule at least 2 weeks ahead, otherwise your going to pay through the nose anywhere you go |
