HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUAA
Is the Hawaii State FIsh which literally means "the fish with a nose like a pig". The Hawaiian reef trigger fish is pronounced just like it is spelled with each vowel matching up with the consonant on its left. If there is no consonant on its left (another vowel instead) then the vowel is pronounced by itself (see the ending of the name).

Little Grass Shack.....
THERE'S A PLACE IN HAWAII
THAT IS VERY DEAR TO ME
I AM HOMESICK AS CAN BE
WON'T YOU LISTEN TO MY PLEA?
I WANT TO GO BACK TO MY LITTLE GRASS SHACK IN KEALAKEKUA HAWAII
I WANT TO BE WITH ALL THE KANES AND WAHINES THAT I KNEW LONG AGO
I CAN HEAR OLD GUITARS A-PLAYING
ON THE BEACH AT HO'ONAUNAU
I CAN HEAR THE HAWAIIANS SAYING
"KOMO MAI NO KAUA IKA HALE WELAKAHAO"
IT WON'T BE LONG 'TIL MY SHIP WILL BE SAILING BACK TO KONA
A GRAND OLD PLACE THAT'S ALWAYS FAIR TO SEE.
I'M JUST A LITTLE HAWAIIAN AND A HOMESICK ISLAND BOY,
I WANT TO GO BACK TO MY FISH AND POI,
I WANT TO GO BACK TO MY LITTLE GRASS SHACK IN KEALAKEKUA, HAWAII

Humuhumunukunukuapuaa

Humuhumunukunukuapuaa
 |
HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUAA
Easy to pronounce, if you remember that Hawaiian vowels are pronounced almost exactly as vowels in Spanish.
As is the case with many Hawaiian words, there is a lot of syllable repetition.
HUMU x 2
NUKU x 2
APU-AA
Repeat fast now:
HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUAA.
Easy!
Aloha. |

Well Im Hawaiian and the fish is called
Humunukunukuapuaa, just break it down into words.
And for the guy who said Hawaii was a dumb place...whatever to him lol. Its not dumb, its a pretty laid-back and tropical place if you ever get a chance to visit there someday. Busy town too.
I lived in Hawaii for 7 years and i am 100% Hawaiian. |

The state fish of hawaii is the humuhumunukunukuapua'a and it's pronounced just as it's spelled:
hu
mu
nu
ku
a (like the a in aqua)
pu
a'a (like the a in aqua with a glottal stop in in).
Glottal stop means you stop the flow of air for a second and then continue on with the same sound.
Hope this helps.... |

HONOLULU — Everyone thought the humuhumunukunukuapuaa was Hawaii's state fish. As it turns out, the brightly colored fish with the excessively long name has been dethroned.
