Not the south side!
The WEST SIDE is the new south side. The south side has some nice neighborhoods like Hyde Park, Canaryville, Chinatown, and Bridgeport. I would guess there are no good neighborhoods on the west side from about where the United Center is (Madison & Damen) all the way out to Oak Park. |

The whole of Chicago is unsafe unless you make a concious effort not to be a victim. Crimes of the same caliber happens ALL over Chicago.
You hear crime emphasized more on the news that this and that happened on the south side. Yet everything that's happening in the hip/trendy and tourist areas is UNDER REPORTED or never reported in the first place. At least you know what goes on in the south side. What you don't know is more dangerous.
If all you've done is watched the news but have never lived, worked and played in a particular part of the city, you don't know if it's dangerous or not.
Plus, the media get's a little touchy about exposing the crime rate on the west side because if you get too far west, you cross over into a wealthy suburb. On west side, out of the city limits is by far the worst area. |

I agree with Rick the west side is the knew south side. But lets not forget the Inglewood Area it's south and it's BAD. |

Probably the Englewood neighborhood. The far south sides and far west sides tend to be the most dangerous parts of Chicago. People like to say that the south side is dangerous, and it was, but it's a bit scattered now - there's only pockets of truly dangerous territory, as much of the South Loop, Bronzeville, Bridgeport, Hyde Park, and Kenwood has gentrified. But the far west side - particularly west of Garfield Park - is still pretty bad. Austin, Englewood - all very dangerous areas. |

My ex lived in Pilsen and for a female it's dangerous. You really need to watch out-gangs-men drinking all day..but the food is worth the getting shot. The rent is really cheap so maybe it's worth it after all |

City Hall. It's their biased legislation and ineffectual aldermen that leaves the poor areas of the city underserved and ignored. There wouldn't be all that trouble if they spent as much money protecting and fixing up those areas that the spend on the affluent areas. |

most north siders haven't been on the south side, hence these ignorant replies.
if you have a car, you'll have to sell it because it's hard to drive on the north and even harder to park. they "sell" parking spaces! However, if you don't drive, you have to live on the north. good public transportation. |

The South side is the worst by far. The Blackstone Rangers still roam the streets. I live in East Garfield Park on the West side and its really nice and many yuppies are re-locating back to the Garfield Park area |
