I advice you to go to the Empire State building (but I think it's a bit expensive for having a nice view of New York : $13 !)
Don't forget Ground Zero with the rusted cross and the Statue Of Liberty (I don't know if it's possible to go inside for security reasons. I saw it on a boat).
A nice walk on Broadway at night is wonderful and the day ,if you want, why not to go to Central Park.
The best way to see a city, take a map and have some good shoes for walking. Most of the nice things to see are free if it's outside.
This is what I would do if I were you ( but I went to New York last year !) |

Go to the top of the Empire State Bldg, before sun down to see the city in day light, then stay for about a hour up there & watch the city light up, nothing like in the world.
----
Then a Sunrise Ferry ride on the Staten Island Ferry

visit the statue of liberty!!!!!!!!
or
the empire state building
or
the brooklyn bridge
or the
ground zero site
or
walk around times square.
now, why all these places? well, i've lived in new york only one year so far, and i can say for sure that these places are the truly iconic new york places. sure, it has many places where the locals would go, where the tourists dont. but if u have limited time. u'll wanna see the places that makes new york famous.
if u have one day, u have enough time to see all the places i mentioned. plan properly, use the subway, start early in the morning.
gimme 10 points? please, please? |

Not trying to be funny here, but what you have to do in New York is be very careful when crossing the street. If you happen to have a foot in the gutter at the wrong time you could end up losing a leg. And before you cross, look to the other side to be sure there is enough room on the sidewalk for you to step up when you get over there. |

N.Y. is great. You will have a good time in any of the Burroughs. Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, West Chester, and the Bronyx. I suggest take a walk down in Central Park. Ride the subways, some were...walk along side the river on the Brooklyn or Manhattan side. Have a good time. |

Well most of them have given good suggestions.
My 2 cents - try to take the New York pass which will let you skip all the wait in the queues and give you a guide book as well to plan it out -

I think if I were 18, I would think the bus tours were intersting and of course shopping. I would recommend shopping in Soho and the East Village/Lower Eastside - over by Tompkins Square park- lots of funky boutiques. I also would go to Chinatown and go into all the little shops. Pearl River is on Broadway and the Great wall on the corner of Broadway and Canal.
Enjoy! |

Visit the Cloisters up past the George Washington Bridge on the West Side. It's the Metropolitan Museum of Art's medieval art collection and it is absolutely breathtaking. |

Just in response to Beendare.... the observatory deck isclosed in the ESB. If yo can try to visit the "Ground Zero" sight. It is sad to see but it reminds everyone that we have to stand strong and together. And then go see A Chorus Line on Broadway, what a fabulous show. Oh and Happy Birthday. Have FUN!!!!!!! |

there isnt just one thing to do. I would go to the top of Empire state, have a drink in the rainbow room, visit ground zero, see central park, go to where lennon was shot(one of your fellow brits so you would want to definatley see that & strawberry fields), visit the intrepid, and see a show. |

For the best view of the entire city, go to the top of Rockefeller center, that way you can also see Empire State building. The evening or sunset time is the most magnificent.
The cost is about $17, you can stay as long as you want. |
