The rural areas are typically safer but remember, damn near EVERY thing makes the news here. It's no wonder people think the US is ridden with crime. In fact, since firearm prohibitions in the UK came about, the crime rate in much (of England, anyway) has actually been higher - a lot higher - than here in the US. Now, imagine someone asking whether there's anyplace safe in Britain. You know there are plenty of safe places in the UK yet picture someone afraid to go to your countries because they 'know' that crime is the only thing going on. When I lived in Seattle (fairly low rates) there was a Japanese student at my university who's mother would only go as far as Vancouver, B.C. to see her. She 'knew' from TV that the whole US was one big shoot-em-up. What are you going to say? By the way, Vancouver is a great place to get mugged or worse, and IT'S not so bad; in fact it's a lovely city. You get the picture.
Even in the US murder capitals such as Detroit, Memphis, or (my hometown) St. Louis, such things are almost wholly contained in ghetto areas. Stay out of those areas; duh, right? |

Don't believe the hype. America is much safer than it's portrayed. Most people haven't even been mugged, yet alone stabbed, and gang violence is usually concentrated in certain areas, and only generally effects those involved with it. Similarly, a lot of other violence is between people who know each other.
Assuming you steer clear of known dangerous neighborhoods where you have no business, you should be fine, regardless of the state. I've also walked around so-called ghettos and had nothing happen to me, but I have been jumped by kids in a supposedly nice area. Anything can happen to anyone anywhere, but if you don't go looking for trouble you will be safe 99.99% of the time. |

all states have their dangers knife crime is less common than gun crime ppl dont tend to stab you with the knife if all they want is your purse but theyll probably just snatch it and run chances are they dont have a gun if someone tries to stab you in america just draw a gun on th em or better still run cross the street if you see anyone comming the other way dont hang out too long keep to the bussiest areas in public dont walk alone or in strange areas walk with friends or take the bus |

Northern New England..Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. All three had by far the lowest rates of Violent Crime in the US, like half of the average. Maybe they're less stressed out up there? |

Alaska... it's so sparsly populated, there's unlikely to be anyone anywhere near you to stab you... you may be eaten by a polar bear though ;-) |

You don't get stabbed in the US, you get shot. This happens in major cities, small towns, even out in the wilderness where you might get mistaken for a deer by a hunter. You better stay where you are. |

the only place peeps get stabbed is in england.
You have to look at crime statistics. But in general, some of safest states are washington, hawaii, alaska |
