I have lived in the area for over 5 years now and I like it. I would make sure that you work on the same side of the tunnel as you live on, as traffic can get really bad at rush hour. I would also pay attention to the noise ratings your Realtor is required to provide. It is basically decibel rating, and the further you are from a base, the lower it is. The planes flying in and landing make a lot of noise.

Hampton and Newport News are a little less expensive, and a good 30-45 minutes to the ocean. Housing was very cheap, but has sky rocketed the last few years. The market is adjusting, and prices are now coming back down. It is not the best job market, pay is still not in line with what housing now costs. Virginia Beach is a pleasant tourist trap. Housing is probably most expensive there as anything near the ocean costs a fortune.

There is plenty to do in the area. There is an aquarium, a zoo, a botanical garden, lots of beach themed activities and plenty of shopping. The area of course houses a large and diverse military community. A good deal of younger couples and retired military live in the area.

I once again will advise, do not work on the opposite side of the tunnel (any of them) and make sure you get a quieter home (usually rated at 65-70 decibels. Many people have even moved down to North Carolina. If you can tolerate a 30-45 minute commute, it is cheaper to own a home there.

depends on where you're at but pretty much everywhere the cops are assholes. but i guess thats every state too probly

the area your moving to I personally dont like alot, but I love VA its beautiful and there is sooo much variety throughout....

I went there to visit my sister when her husband was in the Navy, Norfolk, but she lived in Virginia Beach. I loved it there. It did have some crazy strict laws, but other than that, its something I myself could've adapted to. Good luck with your move. Hopefully by summer you can enjoy the beach.
