Best choices in the US would be San Francisco or San Diego. Other sunbelt cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, and New Orleans do not have very good public transport systems and Miami has a high crime rate. I would also look at some of the smaller centres such as Albuquerque, Savannah, and Charleston.

In Canada, Vancouver is the best choice, but it's not exactly warm (except compared to the rest of Canada) and can be very dreary for months on end in the winter. Victoria has a slightly better climate but is very quiet and best suited for those whose idea of retirement is puttering in the garden.

In Europe I would recommend Lisbon or Barcelona. Both are beautiful cities with plently to do and both enjoy mild climates and excellent public transport. Rome is also a good option but is more expensive and in my view Athens is simply too hot in the summer. You may not enjoy living in a place, though, where the lingua franca is not English, unless you're prepared to learn another language. The south coast of England also could be considered but again, it is not terribly warm and as with the rest of the UK it is astonishingly expensive. Everything costs double the amount that it would in North America.

Any of the large Australian cities would be good bets, Perth having the best overall climate. Melbourne, though warm during most of the year, can get downright chilly and miserable. I've also heard good things about Auckland, in New Zealand.

Cape Town, in South Africa, is said to have the most idyllic climate in the world and is a very beautiful city, but unfortunately South Africa is a very dangerous country and using public transport would be out of the question.

Check out Costa Rica; low cost of living, good transit system, public health care, temperate climate, english is very common.

A friend of mine just moved to North Carolina and loves it there. The winters are mild (January average temp is 40-degrees F) but you still have the beautiful fall foliage. There is good public transportation in Raleigh and Charlotte and she told me that as a single woman living alone, she feels perfectly safe walking home at night; she frequently sees police cruising around and there is a great sense of community, so everyone looks out for their neighbors. Also, the cost of living is quite reasonable, which is important for someone close retirement. Hope this helps!

I don't think there are many places without medical care places anymore - go to the travel agency as they will have more experience and be able to recommend a trip and sometimes they even have special promotions for senior citizens

Lots of places in CA, AZ, NM, NV and OR are like that. Consider mid-sized cities on the West Coast or the Southwest area of the US.

Santa Barbara, CA

it is beautiful!! i lived there for 4 years and plan on going back to retire there. its always sunny and pleasant, plus its near the ocean!

downtown is beautiful plus you get to see celebs!! i ate at the same restaurant as Tyra Banks! A friend of mine saw Lindsey Lohan, she was also eating at the same restaurant as her.

congrats on retirement! your REALLY fun years start now! good luck, i hope this information was helpful!

I'm leaning towards Los Angeles on this one - it's beautiful as far as weather is concerned. And if you leave around Westwood (by UCLA) then there's always something to do and it should be pretty safe. It is a bit expensive though.

Another option that comes to my head is Austin, Texas, and possibly Huntsville, Alabama.
