Detroit has a great music scene and several venues within the city and in the suburbs to enjoy all types of music.
Tourism has probably picked up with the building of Ford Field, Comerica Park and the Casino Hotels. The main reason people would come to Detroit is for sports (Final Four in 2009 or something Automotive related). Detroit is a rust belt city, like Cleveland, Buffalo and Pittsburgh. It does not have the beaches of Miami or the glitz of Las Vegas.
The crime rate is probably still high, but still overrated and exaggerated in my opinion. The only things that get put on the news are the bad things.
Driving in the city, you will see a bad block, then a good block and a mixture of neighborhoods. Some things have been left neglected for years, but it takes a lot longer to fix them. It is a very large city in terms of square miles and impossible to have it all look perfect. I have to say that in the last 10 years, the city has really been cleaned up.
The schools are probably one of the biggest problems in the city right now. I believe that if they can correct the educational system, then the crime rate will go down. If you have the education, the standard of living automatically goes up.
The other problem in Detroit is that it does not have enough diversity. The region as a whole does, but a lot of people will not move into Detroit because they will be the minority.
While gangs may be a problem in other cities like LA, I have never heard of anything being gang related. I think the majority of the major crimes spawn from drug deals gone bad.
Detroit is one of the top sports towns in the world. Winning or losing, the fans come out to support the teams. I can't say that for a lot of other big cities.
The city is and always will be an industrial mecca. It is not a pretty city and does not pretend to be. It was founded as a manufacturing city and the world can thank Detroit when it drives away on wheels. Detroit is tough and misunderstood. Stereotypes are all across this world and Detroit fits right into it.
Detroit knows it has a bad image and it is slowly being corrected. |

Detroit used to be beautiful but now it is a slum.Only the downtown area and surrounding area is nice, but the rest is wow.The suburbs of Detroit are better. After the riots after Martin Luther King's assassination the city just went downhill. The crime rates are ridiculous.Something should be done. There are beautiful historic houses there once owned by prominent whites and they were taken over by the thugs and its just a slum with big houses.
Detroit needs much improvement. |

Definitely has some downsides, but doesn't every metropolitan city have them? You can't tell me that New York, Indianapolis, San Francisco, and other large cities don't have gang activity or drug rings - something Detriot is looked down upon for having. I think Detriot is a nice place to visit, perhaps live in, but like all cities you have to choose where you go very carefully. There are parts of Detriot that are wonderful to see and experience, but there are also those that aren't so friendly. As for the culture, I consider it to be extremely vast compared to my small town, which has almost one religion and very subtle differences in family lives. Detriot isn't as horrible as people portray it to be. |

Well considering I was born their and still live barely 20 minutes outside it i'll give you my honest answer. The schools suck and are drownding in years of debt, everyone is trying to leave the school my high school is starting to have as many kids bussed in from detroit as actual kids living in the city. Parts of the city are still really beautiful and fun and attract tourists, The crime rate is large but it is not by any means a dangerous city. just travel in the daytime and avoid certain areas it really is no worse than alot of other large cities in the U.S |

Well, I've lived in Detroit for all my life and I must say that I DO NOT APPRECIATE "BLONDIES" and all these other people who haven't even LIVED in Detroit for atleast a year judging it. It's some bad parts, yeah, but Detroit it a awesome city and I always feel right at home whenever I go there and I miss it so much! If you go to the right parts, like Downtown, you'll really have a good time. |

I think the city of Detroit is completely reparable, but due to the political advantage takers, it remains what it is. Sure it is looking better, but dirty politics seems to overshadow that. One day someone will take this well deserving city by the nuts, and shake some sense into it!! |

Music great
Tourism...um does Detroit get many tourist? I've always assumed to many people let the hype of the D being murder city that many people don't see Detroit as a place to visit.
But if they did they would find some nice things to check out.
The Economy is down the toilet right now. I think Michigan relied to much on the auto industry to be its bread and butter.
but Detroit has seem to be making a bit of a turn around (at least in some spots) but I think they still have a big wall to climb getting people to do business in the city due to what many still thank about the city.
Crime Rate is still to high to be honest
Schools seem to be a mess (though I can't say my local school system is any better) they don't seem to have enough money for books and repairs and the school board always seems to be fighting over something (or against some parent)
Culture, yep Detroit has lots of culture. if you want high culture we have great museums and a great symphonic orchestra. There are a lot of artist and musicians in the city. |

Like any other big city it has its faults. No big city is perfect.
I believe Detroit is misunderstood and there is tons of history here.
Once I started looking at this city in a tourist view I discovered a whole new Detroit and an appreciation for the city I took for granted and put down even though I live here. |

its overrated rated as far as the crime all you have to do is leave your lights on when you leave your house so they will think someone there, circle the block before you park in your drive way after 10:00 pm, dont stare a a nika without sayin something, dont wear cartier glasses cuz they will get snatched, and dont think you tuff and you might not get hurt |

Ok picture it this way, 8 mile is Detroit's northern Border. I live at 16 mile. My suburb is the 4th safest city in America. Downtown Detroit is perfectly safe. If you go into some of the bad areas and districts, it looks like a warzone. These areas are confined and Detroit's violence rarely leaves those areas. I wouldn't reccommend taking a stroll through these areas, but still the chances of something happening are slim. |

I love Detroit becuase of all of the culture it has to offer, not to mention the sports. With that being said I will move when I am ready to have a family.
I wouldnt send my kids to DPS but I would send them to Cornerstone schools which I understand are great. |

I don't like it there. It's way too industrial and ghetto for me. It makes Pittsburgh and Atlanta look like Boulder and Key West. Getting in and out of their airport is a pain. The traffic is so bad that these druggy-looking folks just walk around selling water bottles to drivers sitting in traffic. Also, I don't like the climate. It's cold like Canada, but it's not nearly as lush, mountainous, and forested. They finally lost their long held #1 most dangerous U.S. city position to Camden, NJ last year. |

I only live about an hours drive away from that city, but you can bet that I do not go through it unless I absolutely have to. The crime rate is the worst. The streets are a mess. The interstate surfaces are full of holes and ruts, one could lose a cow in them holes and never find her for a year. Glad I don't live there, and hate to visit. |
