Hockey Town (Red Wings), Motown, Motor City, The D, but no, not 'Troit and I don't think you are going to get that to catch on. |

- Hockeytown
- The Big D
(Never heard of "Troit"...)
EDIT: To jb - Yes "day-twah" is the French pronunciation. |

I've from the burbs. Personally, I've never heard 'Troit. I've heard Motor City, Day-Twah (think French pronunciation of Detroit), the D, Hockeytown... |

The most popular is Motor city, and Hockey town. 8 mile is NOT a nick name for the D. Oh, and Detroit is often referred to as the D. |

I never heard of it being called triot. The three most popular I can think of is the D, Motor city, and Hockey town. Detroit is called Hockey town because the Red Wings are the best Hockey team. |

Some of the young people are/were calling it the 313.
Others I have heard through the years include:
Automobile capital of the world,
The town that Henry Ford put on the map, and
The Arsenal of democracy. |

During football season, we call it "Loserville"
Hockeytown refers to Detroit being home to one of the six original National Hockey League franchises, the Red Wings - who are one of the most successful franchises in history.

The two I am most familiar with are;
1) Motown because Detroit is the Automotive Capital of world and the automobile is the gift that Detroit gave to the world during the 20th Century.
2) Hockeytown because of the Detroit Red Wings popularity and success it has had in the last decade. The Red Wings have won 4 out of the 11 Stanley Cups in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008. |

*8 Mile is a street that divides Detroit from the burbs not a nickname for the city itself* |
