What part of Detroit is safe to get a hotel?

My wife and I are driving up from Cleveland and wanted to go to the casinos and the car museum in Dearborn. Any suggestions on what areas to avoid would be appreciated. I am not looking for the same ole song and dance, "Oh it's all safe" or " Oh the whole city is crime riddled." I live in Cleveland. I know crime, been robbed at gunpoint, been pulled out've a car at gunpoint by the cops cause I was lost in the wrong neighborhood. Life happens in big cities. I just want to avoid the seedier side of it. I know Livonia and Novi are safe, just looking for something closer to Dearborn.
Additional Details
Thank you for all your answers. I opted to stay in Novi at the Country Inn and Suites. I know that this is a safer suburb as I stayed in Livonia last time I came up. And I took the advice and went to Windsor to gamble instead.

Just stay in Dearborn its perfectly safe and really close to the museum. There is the Hyatt on Ford and Southfield and a Ritz Carlton if you can afford it also on Ford and Southfield. Lots of celebreties stay at that Ritz. If its safe enough for them I'm sure you'll be O.K. There is also the Dearborn Inn, a Marriot and a Double tree all in the same general area. All of this is technically about a 1/2 a mile from what is actually Detroit but you won't even know when you've entered it. This part of Detroit is a mixed neighborhood that is pretty safe. I've lived there my whole life and I have never been robbed, carjacked, shot at or anything else. All of the "crazies" know to stay out of Dearborn the police are pretty harsh there. It would probably be more convieniant to stay in one of the hotels I mentioned. They are all practically within walking distance of the museum and you won't run the risk of getting lost in some truelly bad part of Detroit which might happen if you stayed somewhere like Troy and had to drive through the city.

Mopar Muscle Gal
Renaissance Inn @ Southfield freeway/Ford Rd
Doubletree in same location
Hyatt on Southfield Service Drive closer to Michigan Ave
there are also a few hotels/motels near the North side of Fairlane Mall

If you're already use to the crime than any hotel in dearborn will do you just fine, that part isn't riddled with any mor ecrime than anywhere else really, I understand you don't want to get lost I recomend holiday inn or best western they're nicer hotels and are in allen park which is basically a nice side of dearborn. Hope that helps

I would stay in Greektown, downtown Detroit. The Atheneum I believe it's called, is new, should be pretty nice.

IN Downtown Detroit, such as the Hilton Garden Inn, Courtyard Marriot, Hotel Park Ave., Marriot Renaissance, Holiday Inn Express and the Atheneum Suite Hotel. (and for future visiting), the fabulous Westin Book Cadillac, Sheraton Ponchatrain, Double Tree Fort-Shelby, Greektown Casino and Hotel, Motor City Casino nand Hotel, MGM Casino and Hotel.

I have relatives from Cleveland who stayed at of the downtown hotels for a reunion and they loved the experiences compared to the one they had at a crappy hotel in Southfield. Come enjoy the Urban life in the city and stay away from those overrated sprawlburgs.

The nicest hotels in the Detroit metropolitan area are located in the city of Dearborn. Within the city of Dearborn is not only a Hyatt Regency Hotel but also an award winning Ritz-Carlton Hotel and the famous Dearborn Inn. Dearborn also contains many lower priced hotels such as: The Residence Inn and the Doubletree Hotel. When traveling in Southeast Michigan, it is best to stay out of areas such as: Taylor, parts of Inkster, and almost all of Detroit (except for Downtown). When traveling into Detroit, it is best to take the major freeways (from Dearborn I-94 to M-10 'The Lodge'). However, Michigan Avenue will also offer you a direct path to downtown (just make sure to stay on the main road, for parts of the journey will take you through rather 'seedy' portions of the city). I know that you wanted to remain closer to the city of Dearborn, but many venues on the northern side of the city offer renowned shopping and dining experiences. Places such as the Somerset Collection (a mall located in Troy) and the city of Birmingham are nice getaways within the Detroit area. The Hyatt, in Dearborn, also offers a luxury dining experience. While a bar offers panoramic views of the area on the top of the hotel, Giullio & Sons offers a nice dining experience. Downtown Dearborn also offers great restaurants (Italian restaurants such as Ciao and Andiamo are excellent as well as Middle Eastern Cuisine from places like Lashish/Talals and LaPita are also very nice). I would personally consider Downtown Detroit to be safe at night, for it has experienced somewhat of a renaissance over recent years. The car museum in Dearborn, most likely the Henry Ford Museum, will also offer a very fun, and educational, view of the region. Enjoy your trip to the Detroit area!

Dearborn or Allen Park are both safe areas. If you're looking for much safer, try Allen Park or Taylor. There are many right off of I-75, that you can then take right up to Detroit

try to say in the cityi lived in the detorit area for about 4 years and as long as u stay in the some what big part of the ciys u are in u will be ok

shhhhhhhhhhhimhiding
Try looking for a hotel in Troy . It is located right off I-75 and is a very nice area. Approx 20 min or so from the casinos and The Henry Ford it also has a fantastic mall right down the road. I live north of Troy ( and Detroit) so I reccommend it. Ummmmm you might want to think about bringing your birth certificate and going to Canada to gamble

wash_your_poon
“All of it. Quit acting like all of Detroit is bad.” – Ummm yes ALL of Detroit is bad. It is the epicenter of “bad” – what planet do you live on? Why is Detroit associated with every joke about dangerous places to live? Outside of Gary, Indiana it is the most dangerous city in America, which makes it the most dangerous big city in America.

Do yourself a favor, save a few bucks and go to Las Vegas. Save yourself the time and trouble of Detroit’s third-rate casinos. They are full of “locals” looking to gamble their way out of misery. If you want to get depressed watching the unemployed lose their government checks gambling then you found your nirvana. Plus, they are a complete joke.

The Atheneum hotel is connected to the Greektown casino.
There are several lovely B&Bs IN Detroit (yes! in Detroit!); try the Inn on Ferry Street--I think they may run shuttles to the casino, or at least to some nearby restaurants who run shuttles.

The Courtyard by Marriott on Mercury Drive in Dearborn was recently renovated and is so clean, I thought it was brand new when I was there recently. Dearborn Inn, Ritz-Carlton, and Hyatt are all near the museum, and probably run shuttles to downtown and the museum, too (the museum is essentially "next door" to these). There's also a Doubletree on Ford Road, and a Hampton Inn on Michigan Avenue.

As far as anything to avoid, if you're used to keeping aware in a big city, you will have no greater problem than anyone else in the world. You can tell a seedy motel as well as the rest of us!

Have a wonderful trip.

If you going to Ford museum, you can stay locally either right across the street at Dearborn Inn (it is historical building, very traditional and was build by Henry Ford) or more contemporary Hyatt Regency Dearborn about mile away. Both are 4 starts hotels. . Pretty close to Downtown Detroit (about 12 miles). It is pretty safe area.

Oh yeah, if you will be in the area, stop at Eagle Tavern, one of the oldest functional restaurants. It is located inside of the Greenfield Village

I absolutely hate when these people who don't actually live IN DETROIT answer these questions, they all live in the suburbs. If you want to stay at a nice hotel in Downtown Detroit, that is right next to the Greektown Casino, try the Atheneum Hotel in Greektown. This hotel is upscale, and completely safe, it's about 2 blocks from police headquarters, and it's in the heart of Greektown, filled with restaurants(Greek & American) and pastry shops. Within Dearborn, I would recommend any Marriott brand hotel, they're relatively cheap, and clean for the most part.

All of it. Quit acting like all of Detroit is bad.

.
so your traveling to the underworld?
we have been waiting for you mahahah......
just kidding,
the one hotel that won't have a corpse in the next room is the Renaissance , and it is 160 a night. I stayed at the Omni, but I had to drive a block, it was frightening?????? there is only one block in Detroit to be, they need to put a wall around it!!!!!!

Take my advise, get on 94, keep going north till it almost ends, in Port Huron, get on the bridge to Canada, the casino is right across the river, so easy to find, it's so safe, there isn't even smoking aloud in there.

Don't let Detroit's reputation scare you. Any hotel in the suburbs are fine! No one will bother you. Suburbs will also be cheaper than staying downtown. Northern suburbs are only a quick 15 minute drive downtown on I-75!

Go to Marriott.com or choicehotels.com and you will find hotels in Dearborne. We have stayed in Dearborne at one of the Marrott's Town House Suites and it was nice. We travel down to the Detroit area about once a month and we usually stay at the Spring Hills Suites in Southfield. Good Luck.

ferg a
Theres a holiday in across i94 from the museum itself.
