What parts of la (california) are safe?

I have not found this answer anywhere as crazy as it sounds.I plan on moving to california sometime soon and i would like to know what parts of Los Angeles are nice to live in for a white family with pets.I know everywhere has bad parts but i absoloutly do not wanna live in the hood where you are likely to get stabbed, raped,or shot.So if anyone can give me a short simple answer i would be very happy.

okay, you want a real answer right? california is beautiful, don't bother yourself with where to live. no matter where you live you risk the chance of getting robbed. does everyone think criminals only rob people in their own neighborhood? um.. no. they go to the rich, nice neighborhoods like everyone else is suggesting for you to move to. so no matter what you risk these things happening. i say you need to be asking where NOT to move. you should avoid these places if you don't wanna live in "the hood" as you put it.
AVOID:
1. compton (duh)
2. long beach (dummy up there says its safe, well its as hood as any other "hood" city can get)
3. south central LA and i suggest just not moving to LA anyway, the people aren't that nice and the traffic is horrible
4. wilmington
5. san pedro
6. gardena
7. no where in the harbor area pretty much

these are all i can think of off top my head. if you got the money i suggest bixby knolls, signal hill is pretty nice, glendale.. but all these cities in LA county got hood people in them or near them regardless. so if you really want to avoid all this then i suggest moving to orange county or hunington beach is really nice and its mainly white population up there. so my number one answer for you would be hunington beach or surrounding cities in that area. good luck and as my hubby suggested above (tha_locc) as long as you stay away from this stuff then you should be okay even if you leave near "the hood". all you really gotta worry about really is keeping your kids away from it cuz hood **** turns even the straighted white kids out (i've seen it happen lots) as long as you aint poor you should be able to move to a nice neighborhood and avoid all that stuff though. good luck.

Too many people have this vision in their head that LA is one or the other (either Beverly Hills or Compton). They either think LA is a fairy tale fantasy or an apocalyptic ghetto. In fact, most of it is working class and middle class stiffs working to pay the bills. Like me.

If you want to live here and enjoy the weather, then you have to pay for it. You put up with the smog and the traffic, enjoy the weather and pay your rent or mortgage. My advice is to start checking out craigslist, rent.com, and apartments.com if you are looking to rent. You’ll quickly see that the minimum rent for a non-war zone is about $1,000-$1,200 per month for a studio or 1BR. Really nice areas (like the West LA area) easily run $3,000 or more. Want to live near the beach? Expect to pay a premium.

"LA" is such a big place, there are so many neighborhoods/cities where you can live. Of course, even within a city or neighborhood, there are safer sections and less-safe sections.
In Los Angeles, some nice sections are West LA, Brentwood, Westwood, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, Los Feliz, Silverlake, Eagle Rock, Encino, Tarzana, Studio City, Toluca Lake, Granada Hills, Woodland Hills, Sherman Oaks, West Hills, Chatsworth.

To the east: South Pasadena, parts of Pasadena, Altadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, Glendora, San Dimas, Laverne, Azusa, Rancho Cucamonga.

Along the beach: Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, Palos Verdes, Rancho PV.

In Orange County aka "The OC": Seal Beach , Huntington Beach , Newport Beach , Corona Del Mar , Laguna Beach , Dana Point , Capistrano Beach , San Clemente , Brea, Yorba Linda, Orange, Tustin, Irvine, Laguna Hills, Rancho Santa Margarita, Lake Forest

To the west: Agoura, Calabasas, Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Simi Valley, Moorpark.

This is not an all-inclusive list, but it's a start.

you can get stabbed, rapped, and shot anywhere. You don't have to live in the "hood" for that.

well, now practiclly no where's safe...theres alot of gangs now.. even in el monte, a city that's not even close at the size of los angeles, had a shooting attack. sorry to disappoint it, but its true...

There's no such as a safe area PERIOD. Crime can happen anywhere. You may live in a nice luxurious suburb but little you would know that your neighbor may be an alcoholic and one night when you leave that luxurious home to go eat at your parents, your neighbor might be driving home and then rams into you. See how a safe place is non-existent.

I'll just post an add-on comment. Take the suggestions already posted for which areas to look, then contact a few real estate agents for advice on specific neighborhoods. I think they aren't real busy right now and would appreciate something to do. Also check with rental agents in the area. You should probably start looking within a certain radius of where you'll be working, measured in travel time not miles, then multiply that by at least 1.5. The traffic out here can be pretty brutal at times. A couple of resources for the traffic would be sigalert.com and AM radio station KNX 1070. KNX has traffic reports every 10 minutes and sigalert.com has real-time traffic for LA and Orange County, as well as other metropolitan areas.

Before you get out here, or very soon after, get yourself a GPS and/or a Thomas Guide. A Thomas Guide is an amazing compilation of local street maps, layed out in a grid that is logically easy to follow. There are many versions of the Thomas Guide, so be careful to get the one for your area. Become familiar with the general routes of the freeway system (Interstates for you, but we call them freeways). And, out here, we just call them "the 5" (I-5) or "the 10" (I-10), etc. There are quite a few, for example: 5, 10, 15, 105, 110, 405, 605, 710, to name a few. And then there are the California highways that are also freeways: 55, 57, 60, 91, etc. And even some toll roads: 73, 241, 291, etc. It seems like a lot, but you get used to it. You do need to get over being afraid of missing your exit, though. It's no big deal. Your new GPS should help re-route you...or your Thomas Guide, and a good navigator.

Best of luck. We live in south Orange County and we love it here. Then again, I have only a 10 minute commute.

Just watch the news hun and stay away from all the areas they mention in LA. Rosecrans, Bell, Compton...
I have a friend who lives in the hills near Laguna beach and he said they have no problem with crime in his neighborhood.
