I would recommend researching Minneapolis, Minnesota. I acknowledge that it is not as large and diverse as other cities like Los Angeles and New York, but the Twin Cities area sincerely is a very wholesome place to live. The state as a whole has a high standard of living, high quality education, high quality healthcare, and very low pollution.

Minneapolis has many art, theatre, music, and museum facilities and thus boasts a rather high level of culture. The Twin Cities is also the downtown home of the mammoth University of Minnesota, giving the metro a young and progressive element. Although I admit the state is predominantly english speaking white (especially of Scandinavian descent), you would be wrong to count it out completely in terms of diversity given that the area is also home to Mexican, Hmong, and Somalian immigrant communities. The United States' first muslim congressman, Keith Ellingson, represents Minneapolis.

Minneapolis may not offer as much in some terms as the larger east and west coast megalopolises, but it does not have as much endless urban sprawl, pollution, or strife either. Do not let the upper midwest stereotype fool you--it may be much more cosmpolitan than you would expect....

California! It's a wonderful place to live. So many great cities to choose from. Try them all.

Great weather, beautiful scenery, short drives to the ocean, amazing diversity of people, cultures, food, and entertainment. I cannot say it all. You will love it.

California, has best of both worlds, fantastic year round climate, Ski fields, country side, vineyards, 3 major and very different cities...the list goes on, quite a diverse area for jobs as well.

I'd go LA with its recent inner city revival, but I suppose San Fran would be the most common place in California for inner city living.
