Maryland to the north and Virginia to the south. Delaware and Pennsylvania are not too far away

DON W
Washington, DC was carved out of territory provided by the state of Maryland, which continues to surround it more or less to the north, east and west. Across the Potomac River to the south is the Commonwealth of Virginia.

That's it for states that border DC: Maryland and Virginia.

Despite what other posters have said, it is not all that close to Pennsylvania.

Washington is bordered by Maryland and Virginia. We're about an hour-and-a-half drive from parts of West Virginia and Pennsylvania if you take I-70 West through the Maryland panhandle, and about two-and-a-half hours from Philadelphia.
