What to do in Michigan for a weekend? |
I'm in Michigan for the summer and I'm originally from California so I don't know much about the state. My girlfriend is gonna come to visit me soon so I wanna know some places we could go and have fun, any places, even outside Michigan, except Canada. Thanks! |

Go to the Pure Michigan site - http://www.michigan.org/
I don't know why nobody's suggested that yet! This site is well laid out, and has everything you can think of. Of course the people here will give great suggestions (there's a ton of stuff to do in Michigan) - but we'll all give you things WE like doing (you didn't mention the things you're interested in). Go to this site, and browse the things you and your girlfriend are really interested in. If you can't find a load of things to do, then you're not really looking. : )
Happy summer! |

I suggest using Yellow Pages or Yellow Book. Type in activities. Are you a nature lover? Or do you want to explore? Maybe see the Great Lakes, Lake Michigan, hike, and explore the town your staying at. Forbes or Foders might have good ideas, too. |

Well, in the Summer, Michigan can be just as fun as Cali. I would enjoy the Great Lakes, or even local, smaller lakes. I live on Lake St. Clair 20 to 30 minutes north of Detroit. In the summer, we just go drink on the lake all day, go wakeboarding or waterskiing, jetskiing, fishing, or just go to an island off the coast, tie up and party there. If you're not going to do a lot of partying and it's just you and the girlfriend, I suggest camping or something outdoors. If you're in Detroit, you could do anything. There's 5 million people in the metro Detroit area so there's usually something to do that's not outdoors or on the water. Canada is only fun if you're between the ages of 19 and 20 and you can't drink in Michigan. I like to go to Red Wings games whenever I'm home but that's just me. Every city has a sport you can watch. If you're looking to take her to dinner, I'd try Greektown in Detroit, or Mexicantown. Greektown Casino is very nice and modern, and there's also Casino Windsor across the Detroit River. There's usually shows in Hart Plaza on the Detroit Riverfront, and there's a million clubs. Where will you be staying? What age group are ya? What types of things does the girlfriend like?
Afterthought: I just read somebody else's post, and Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio is about a 2 hour drive from Detroit and is the best amusement park in the world hands down. Also a great idea. |

If you dont mind driving there are some awesome places to visit. Mackinac Island is a wonderful place to go if you have the time. Port Huron isnt too far from Detroit and is a nice little town to visit. You could go to a Tiger's game if they are in town. Cedar Point is in Sandusky Ohio and is about 2 1/2 hour drive if you like roller coasters. Waterford is not too far from Detroit and they have a nice little waterpark that would be fun. If you've never been to Frankenmuth that would be a treat as well. They have a lot of neat things there and its about 2 hours from Detroit. There is alot to do! Try to google it! |

Hi. Drive on up to the U.P. (that means Upper Peninsula.)
On a map, we are the part of the state connected to Wisconsin. Many people don't think we are a part of the state of Michigan....but we are! (Many people think we are part of Wisconsin.)
So...come on up! It's about an 8 hour drive north......WAY, WAY north of Detroit.
I live in Marquette....on the shores of Lake Superior! We have lots of beautiful festivals....lots of history of iron ore mining....great lakes (many smaller lakes AND the big lake.....Superior) to explore, swim, fish. We have lots of great bike and hiking trails! Lots of FREE stuff to just explore and take in. Lots of lighthouses, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (which is absolutely beautiful!), which is in Munising, Michigan, etc.
So....come on up! On your way, stop in Mackinaw City. Go over to Mackinac Island (yes, they are both pronounced ----mack-in-aw, but are spelled differently!) and enjoy the great outdoors! |

Visit the Great Lakes! It's known as the Great Lakes state, isn't it? I'm sure experiencing Michigan's fresh waters will be a nice change from California's salty seashores (ha ha, alliteration). The weather is really nice here in the summer.
And if you really want to have a fun time, drive up to the Upper Peninsula and take a ferry to Mackinac Island. The fudge there is delicious (the island is very well known for it), bike-riding is extremely enjoyable, and best of all, you have a lovely view of the lake shore as you tour. I visit there a couple times each year, and every time I find something new to do. =]
Other than that, though, you can also try camping (if you like the wilderness) or visiting Frankenmuth. I've been there before, and there are many, many stores to buy from. You won't get tired.
Whichever you choose, have fun and good luck. Don't get lost! |

Get out and explore. Get to the U.P. if you can. Just a few ideas: Sleeping Bear Dunes, T-Falls in the eastern part of U.P. Holland MI, Tigers game at Comerica Park, Henry Ford Museum and Rouge Park tour, Luddington, Belle Isle, The DIA, Pictured Rocks...

If you like roller coasters and amusement parks then you got to pack up the car and go to Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH well worth the trip. Cedar Point is noted to to have the world best roller coasters check it out on their web site.
However, if it is a romantic weekend your looking for then pack up the car and go the opposite direction, north to Mackinaw Island, MI. No cars are allowed on the Island. Take your bicycles, rent a horse step back in time and enjoy the best place to visit in Michigan. I could write a book on how great it is but go on-line and see for yourself.
Also, if you guys are golfers then the northern lower peninsula of Michigan has a host of resorts to select from. Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands, Treetops, Grand Traverse Resort, ETC......
In addition, there are numerous bed and breakfasts in northern Michigan, many Indian Casinos especially in Mt. Pleasant, MI which gets top entertainment from all over from Bill Cosby to Bon Jovi.
Anyway, enjoy Michigan....................it's the California of the Midwest and we have over 300 years of history to explore (Detroit was founded in 1699). |

I usually see a movie at a theatre called the Palladium in Downtown Birmingham or go to Top Of the Park in Ann Arbor. Almost everything at TOP is free (ex. live concerts, movies, acrobatics, and other entertainment) but bring cash for the food. Its really good. Go down to some of the amusement parks in Ohio too, i especially like Cedar Point and Kalahari. Oh, yeah, you could also swim in some of the lakes, not that we have too many of those around here! |

Without knowing your likes and dislikes it's very difficult for anyone to make good suggestions. I suggest somewhere romantic but not too far from where you're living. The Michigan.org website includes Things to Do and Places to Stay. Perhaps, one of the Beachtowns on Lake Michigan. You might even find a nice B&B with a room available.
If you both like kayaking, the Pere Marquette and Rifle Rivers might be a good choice. Each have one to several day trips available.
If you want to try going to Wisconsin there are two car ferrys a larger one from Ludington and a faster one in Muskegon. |

You can...
•Go to Mackinaw Island
•Go to Olga's (in the mall of course- they have these awesome things called "Snackers"), Jimmy John's, or Big Boy. I know that I have only seen these restaurants in Michigan!
•Visit Ludington. It's on the West coast. I used to live there, and it's a nice tourist town!
•Visit the Mystery Spot in the UP (Upper peninsula). You will have to take the Mackinaw Bridge to get there, which is cool :D
•Go camping, if you like camping. 8]
•Visit the state capital (Lansing, if you didn't know)
Hope this helps! |

Go to casinos!! Michigan has tons of them!!
Detroit has at least two (I think they closed the 3rd).
Near the border of Indiana they have a couple.
Central Michigan has two or three.
Northern Michigan has three or four.
And the upper penisula has several because there's nothing else to do up there besides watch for deer!! lol |
