Here are some ideas of what you can do. First, get a good tour map. Then I recommend you take the BIG APPLE double decker tour bus for an overview of the city. There are several different neighborhoods so I'll highlight these and what to see:
Upper East Side: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum. Walk up and down Madison Avenue for awesome shops and boutiques 96th - 57th st. Walk Park Avenue for architecture all the way to Grand Central Terminal and see the treasures located within. Walk along 5th Avenue to see/go in and out of Central Park - go for a run, go to the Central Park Zoo, go to the Carousel, go for a gondola ride at the boat house.
UPPER WEST SIDE:
Museum of Natural History -a must! on Central Park West,
Walk along Columbus Avenue. Visit the West side of Central Park and pay respects to John Lennon's Strawberry Fields.
MIDTOWN:
Shopping - 57th St (Chanel and the gang), Fifth Avenue - must see Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and FAO Schwartz - many other fun stores.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Museum of Modern Art
Sony Bldg
Rockefeller Center
Go west to awesome new Time Warner center and visit the new Mandarin Hotel bar/restaurant for awesome view and treats!
Oh, Bloomingdale's is on 59th St and Lexington.
Empire State Bldg.
The Intrepid Aircraft Museum is fascinating and on the West side...worth the visit even if you have no kids.

CHELSEA:
Walk around the blooming area sprouting awesome restaurants and shops. Chelsea Pier is fun.

WALL ST:
Pay respects to the 9/11 victims and heroes at the WTC site., Walk Wall St., visit the Chase Hdqtrs, Federal Reserve. Seaport area is great to see.

THE VILLAGE:
Funky shops in the West Village. Walk through the NYU Washington Square Park. The East Village has some shops from new artists and designers

SOHO:
Great galleries and shops on n off West Broadway. Walk thru to Little Italy for awesome meals and desserts...walk through Chinatown. CANAL STREET has stall after stall of Designer "copies"...bring cash and bargain and watch your purse!

Dude , you CANNOT "chill" at Times Square there are 100,000 or more tourists there. Go to Greenwich Village and East Village and Central Park. Take the Circle Line around Manhattan.

After spending 2 summers in New York City with my friends and coworkers here are my recomendations:

Time Square is awesome especially at night when all the lights are lit in the area. Resteraunts there are open throughout the night!

Another place to go is Central Park. There is so many things to see and do there! The place is huge so I recomend you wear comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes too.

Another thing you should try and see with your friends is at least one of the Broadway shows while you are up there. Me and my friends got to see some of the Broadway shows for as little as $25.00 per person.

walking around in NYC and checking out all the shops is fun. broadway shows are also cool if you can find low priced tickets. there is an off broadway show called the blue man show which is funny as well. if anyone likes art the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a good place to go.

China town is awesome. So is soho, little italy, the upper east side, the west side. New York is an incredible place. There's great restaraunts. All kinds of art muesuems. It's endless. The city that never sleeps.

The Empire State Building is an interesting place to go. I also went to Saint Patricks Cathedral, that was beautiful. There are alot of interesting places to go. Also if you like pizza go to an authentic pizza place they are good.

hop on the subway and get on/off at random stops...the best way to experience NYC is to just get lost and explore! Have fun!

ps- yes, you can get some pretty cool stuff in chinatown...but anything with a designer label is fake...oh, and remember to haggle with the vendors!

I just returned from a trip last night. Here are a few things to do on a budget in New York.

In Greenwich Village, John's Pizza is on Bleeker Street. This is Jack Black's favorite pizza place. Good, thin crust pizza.

For many Broadway shows, you can do one of three things for tickets. Students can "rush" for tickets. (you go early in the day and stand in line); We entered a lottery for "The Drowsy Chaperon" . They sell 22 seats this way on the front row for each performance at $25.00 per seat. You put your name in and they pull enough names for 22 seats. We won.; Thirdly, you can go to tkts which sells half priced tickets to shows that aren't sold out.

Central Park. Go to Strawberry Fields. Sometimes people sing John Lennon songs around there. His "Imagine" memorial.

China town has lots of fake goods. It's fun, but very crowded.

There are cruises around the city. I recommend central park and battery park. Ride the subway. Great shopping everywhere. Go bowling. Go to sylvia's in harlem. Go to strand bookstore. Go to the fishmarket.

you can shop in Chinatown for imitation handbags, you can also get some great food in little Italy (and shop there as well) also, if you like felafel's.. the best ones are at Mahmoud's on mcdougal in the village, near 3rd street.. also in the village, not sure what street, is the Peanut Butter Company, you gotta try it. If your into sports, try ESPN Zone in times square, it's also fun if you are not a big sports fan, they have a cool arcade on the top floor. Broadway shows are always great even off Broadway shows and plays. oh i would go uptown to the metropolitan museum of art.. Chelsea piers is fun too. you can visit the world trade center memorial oh and go to the top of the Empire State building. lots and lots to do. have fun.

There is so much to do in NYC. When are you going? Because there's various events. The Halloween parade in Greenwich Village is not to be missed. I suggest you spend more time in the Village than in Times Square. Much more cool things in the Village, lots of neat shops and Times Square is just huge and overwhelming and there's just not much to do there.

The museums are awesome. Check to see what exhibits are going on. The American Museum of Natural History is cool just to stand across the street and look at, but to go in, it's even better. We always make sure to go when we do.

You can buy awesome stuff in Chinatown, and if you go to the garment district, if you're into clothes and stuff, you can get some great deals!

One thing you absolutely must do is eat pizza in NYC. NY pizza is the best! The Chinese food is good too. Not living in NY anymore, those are the two things I miss the most.

I like to take the Staten Island Ferry and just walk around Staten Island. It's really lovely, and you get a nice view of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty from the ferry, especially at night. But if you're just going for a day, it'll kill alot of time, so you'll probably want to skip that.

Another thing I always do (but again probably not a good idea for a day trip) is take the train upriver to Sleepy Hollow. It has the most awesome graveyard you'll ever see. So much history! You can spend the whole day there. And then right down the road go to the Horseman restaurant and have some gourmet pizza. Yum!

Wherever you are, you'll find stuff to do. I love the city and its energy. One word of advice, take the subway! Don't be afraid of it. New Yorkers are really nice folks and will direct you if you're not sure where you're going. But if you take a cab, or try to drive, it's going to take you forever to get anywhere. And you meet really cool people on the Subway and on the train. And remember you're going to be walking outside ALOT, so dress accordingly.

You got me dreaming of my next trip to NY. I'll be heading out in October!

The best thing to do in New York City is shop, shop, shop! In addition to the widest selection of shopping the prices are better than in other parts of the country!

chinatown smells horrible i suggest you go to sony technologie lab and forbes museum there are always fairs going on stay at the hilton it's easy to find and has discounts on many attractions food places are very very common so don't plan out were to eat also look at new jersey we have alot of theme parks

if u are going to new york...i recommend madison square and visit the bethel headquarters...

New York City has almost everything you could ever hope to do. I go up at least once a year, and it is always interesting. Many things, like theater tickets can be very pricey. I do not know tons about Chinatown, but the Village has lots of shops that sell nearly everything. I am partial to the area around 57st and up toward Central Park. Central Park has some nice places to chill and hang out. There's a YMCA that has rooms to let on W 63rd, right off Central Park. There's a really wicked restaurant just south of Central Park on 6th street or so, called The Jekyll and Hyde Club.

With New York, it depends on your budget and your interests. I would definitely recommend good walking shoes, because it is a good town to walk in, and cabs have gotten MUCH more expensive with gas costs.
