All these responses, and so little information of any substance. Muggings are relatively rare, and the homeless are pretty much harmless. Everyone knows about Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.
- If you want to look for nightclubs and events, go to these sites before leaving:
http://www.sfbg.com/
http://www.sfstation.com/clubs/
- If you want tourist brochures, transit passes, and free advice... stop by the TI office next to the Powell Street subway station (Hallidie Plaza entrance) from the airport.
- Speaking of which, the subway fare is only $5.35 for Downtown San Francisco, so I'd recommend it if you don't have a lot of luggage.
- For restaurants, consult the San Francisco Chronicle 100. It's not as comprehensive as the Zagat Survey or Michelin, but it's free and the reviews are fairly detailed.
http://www.sfgate.com/food/top100/2007/
- As for accommodations, the New York Times has a good run-down on some of the more interesting places deemed "affordable"

I'm from brooklyn, nyc and florida, dont be too concerned about the bums.they are, for the most part, harmless.
you should know by now ''street smarts''.
but in china town, keep your stuff close cause of people who pick pocket..
from where you are coming from, you will be fine..
and yes, fishermans warf and the alcatraz are the places to go to.if you have some money to spare, stay in napa valley for a little.
san fran is a site seeing kinda thing.i am here right now and i dont see much interaction but a lot to view/read on/learn etc.
im going to the cental coast soon... my florida, small town, lazy, beach lifestyle calls :) |

there are a lot of things to do, but it depends on if you have a family or not. if you have kids, check out the zoo or an aquarium. they're great there. alcatraz is very interesting |

Don't waste too much time at the fisherman's warf - it's mostly a tourist trap, but the food there is good and there are some entertaining sea lions. Walk accross the Golden Gate Bridge, Go to the top of Twin Peaks and get the best view of the bay area (don't forget a camera), Go to Telegraph Hill (that's where Coit Tower is), and see the non-native parrots flocking about in the trees on the hill. Take an afternoon to go up to Muir Woods (public transportation is available if you search for it). Muir Woods is the largest grove of coastal redwoods in the bay area. |

Pier 39? Those people obviously don't live here, it's a huge tourist trap.
Got to all the various neighborhoods: North beach (Italian), China Town, Japan Town, the Haight (hippie culture), the Castro (gay culture), The Mission (Hispanic culture), etc.
The best views of the GG Bridge are from Baker Beach or the Marin Headlands.
There are great restaurants everywhere from swanky to cheap ethnic places - find them at Yelp.com
Go to Grace Cathedral and walk through the labyrinth, then cross the street and have a drink at the Top of the Mark in the Mark Hopkins Hotel for some great views of the city.
If there is a full moon while you're here do a moonlight kayak in Sausalito: http://www.outdoors.ucsf.edu/programs/detail.php?ID=9300
Then if you run out of things to do go ahead and visit Alcatraz, etc. but there is so much more to SF than the tourist traps.
The crime here is no where near the crime rate in Detroit, I have a friend who lives there and she tells me horror stories. If you wear a fanny pack, dorky Bermuda shorts and a printed t-shirt you are advertising that you're a tourist and someone may bother you. ; ) I've never heard of tourists getting mugged, mugging isn't really a SF thing, if things get stolen it tends to be that they were in plain view and someone snatched them, like i-pods, laptops, etc.
Enjoy! |

Go down to Fisherman's Wharf and try the sea-food there! There's a whole bunch of Sea Food restaurants to try, and they're really cheap too! |

Go To Fisherman's wharf, GO to China town and eat REAL Chinese food, not that greasy crap they sell as Chinese food all over America. Tour the Transamerica building, Coit Tower, view the beautiful architecture of the Victorian era homes |

fiserman's warf is good during the day. There's a consumer pier called pier 39 there and boats that go to Alcatraz for a tour around the prison. There's the Golden Gate Bridge, the Palace of Fine Arts, plays, Golden Gate Park is nice during the day where there's flower gardens, museums, exhibits, etc. Cable cars, China town, Lombard Street's windy road. You can drive over the bay bridge to Oakland and go to their nice collosium to see an event like a concert or a sporting event. On Van Ness there is Davis Symphony Hall were the SF orchestra plays. Have a good time. |

Take the double decker bus tour. It goes everywhere, you get on and off all over town, and the guide we had was a riot--I saw him last week in the credits of some cartoon show. |
