Talk to the driver is good. Get a map and follow along the route, learning all about the things and towns you are passing by. make a game of guessing exactly what time you will get to a certain town or exit. You can play games like finding license plates from every state or finding every letter of the alphabet on billboards. Learn about the plants, trees and rocks in the places you will pass through. Learn about the history (did lewis and clark go there, did the wagon trains go there, did the railroad go through there?) Learn about the industries along the way, and what the economies are like in each area you pass by (is there a wal-mart distribution center, grain elevators or manufacturing plants?) Imagine your whole life as if you lived in each city and tell the story:
I lived in Oakley, Ohio. I was born there and went through school, when i was 23 i got married and had 4 kids. I cared for my garden and grew our food there. I sewed curtains for the house. My husband was a dentist and his office was across town, i used to take him lunch sometimes and he would nag me about flossing my teeth...

etc. make up a story for each town you pass.

We play a game that also helps to keep the driver alert. We call it Buses. First one to see a bus gets to count it. One with the most sitings at the end of the trip WINS.

Pick out a word from the dictionary that you have never heard of and then try to use it in a sentence about something your looking at outside of your window. When you get tired of one, try another. By the time you arrive at your destination, you will have increased your word-power and might continue to use these new words to impress your friends and family.....

Part of the purpose of a road trip is to look at the scenery. If you find that boring, you might play road games with the driver or other passengers.

One of my favorite games when I was growing up was "Alphabet." We watched for the letters of the alphabet anywhere outside the car (billboards, other cars and their license plates, and even a school letter whitewashed on the side of a hill or mountain could qualify for the game) and called them out as we saw them. The first one to make it to Z won! One of the rules is that a letter, once spotted, could be used only once.

Another game is "Ghost." A designated person starts with a letter, the next person adds a letter, and that continues around or back and forth until a word of four letters or more is spelled. The one who names the final letter to spell a word loses the round and gains a letter to spell "ghost" -- first loss gains a G, second loss gains an H, and so forth. Once a player spells G-H-O-S-T with losses, that player is the loser of the game.

And, finally, a game I saw in an old a movie with Glen Ford: Tic, Tac, Toe. In the car, it's not likely you'll have ready access to a pencil and paper, though, so you imagine the layout of the Tic, Tac, Toe board and use numbers to call your choice of squares -- 1-2-3 go along the top from left to right, 4-5-6 across the center row, and 7-8-9 across the bottom. The game rules are the same as the one played on paper, but the players call out numbers instead of writing X or O in the boxes. For example, X player calls 5, Y calls 3, X calls 1, Y calls 9, X calls 6, Y calls 4, X calls 8, Y calls 2, and X calls 7 for a cat's game.

Well, you keep company to the driver. Talk with him and if there is no subject of interest, read him some book with easy to understand essays!

See how many different state license plates you can spot (keep a list )
Try to determine the most popular car with in a certain area by keeping count . Chevy, Ford , etc .
Look for interesting places to stop . The driver may not read all of the signs along the way .
Play ,Who was that? We will honk and wave at total strangers on the street or in their yards . We wave with our hands in front of our face so they can't see who we are . They will wonder .Who was that? You get some pretty funny responses.

Be happy you don't have to drive. See how bad you can annoy the driver. Make faces at people you pass and watch their reactions. Sleep. Read magazines. Count things. Eat snacks.
