What would be a good gift to give someone moving to Seattle?

A co-worker is moving to Seattle soon. For her going away party, our boss thought that giving her umbrellas (b/c of all the rain there) would be funny, yet useful. I was just wondering if anybody out there is Y!A land knows of any other useful gifts to give somebody moving to Seattle. I doubt she needs 11 umbrellas.

Probably not a postcard of the Space Needle... A raincoat, maybe? Or some flannel? ;)

I was also going to say umbrellas! Hee! A guidebook to the city (Moon Handbooks are good), a subscription to a local Seattle musuem, tickets to one of its museums, or a mounted picture of the skyline would work. Or get a some of the 'Frasier' episodes. "Good morning, Seattle.."

With the umbrella, I would give her a gift certificate to a tanning salon. (lol)

Seriously, my daughter lives there and they get less rain than we do in New York. Gift cards are always nice. Bookstore, Best Buy, etc. They also have a Macy's out there. Tickets to a sports event. A phone card to call you all back home. A gift card to Starbucks. Just think of all the things you enjoy but hate spending money on and you will come up with many ideas.

Good Luck to your friend)

Some of the ideas suggested so far that I like:

Movies based here in Seattle - Sleepless in Seattle, Say Anything, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Grey's Anatomy.

If you can track them down, old episodes of "Almost Live" could be fun too, showing off the Northwest somewhat odd sense of humor.

A Starbucks card and a re-usable travel mug. There is a drive through espresso stand almost on every corner here, and at least one starbucks in every town.

Tickets to see something here - the Mariners, Seahawks, Seattle Film Festival, Ballet, Opera etc. depending on her interests.

I also like the idea of a good map of the city or surrounding area, or Hiking guides. The Mountaineers have published a bunch of great books about local hikes in this area if your co-worker is an outdoorsey type.

Funnily enough, I've lived here for a total of 16 years now and have only recently started occasionally carrying an umbrella.

Hello,

I would be inclined to give her some type of electronic address and contact book so she can keep in touch with all of you.

Cheers,

A nice blanket would be good for snuggling with on chilly nights. Most Seattlites don't use umbrellas much, much less 11.

I probably wouldn't get her an umbrella, I have found that most people that live here don't carry umbrellas. My first month here I carried one and someone told me that I looked like a tourist :) Singles is another good movie that was set in Seattle, along with the others already mentioned. Starbucks gift cards are always a good thing around here, if she likes the outdoors than maybe an REI gift card? Instead of the umbrella I would have to go with the rain jacket. Tell her good luck!!

Well, Seattle is the city that goes through the most sets of sunglasses so probably at least one pair of those. Maybe a stair climber to get her used to climbing up and down all of the hills, A starbucks mug, since we are one of the most environmentally stringent cities, Hmmmmmm, definitely an umbrella, I can't live without mine and I've lived here for 24 years now. Oh and a good digital camera so that she can take pictures of all the mountains and other natural attractions that are here.

I would get her tickets to the art museum, rock museum, opera, sports (Mariners, Seahawks, Sonics) or ballet depending on what she's into. It will force her to get out and learn the city.

What about a raincoat or a pocket umbrella, that is a collapsible one.

George B
A nice raincoat.

Instead of 11 umbrellas or Starbucks gift cards, take up a collection and get her a fabulous Burburry rain coat.

If you want to keep up the rain theme, try a few umbrellas, a raincoat and gollashes (sp).

Seattle is also know for what- coffee. Hello, starbucks headquarters. Maybe some cute coffe mugs, or a mug holder.

What about things to remind her of the town she is leaving? Most towns are known for something, and you could give her a small momento of that.

Hi'Lo
Coffee grinder, fancy coffee pot or French Press. Maybe everyone can pitch in and and get a whole set including coffee cups, saucers, creamer pitcher, sugar bowl and spoons

Funny how so many people are clueless about Seattle. I got the same comments from my coworkers in FL when I was moving - and it rains more than TWICE as much there! Do you know we're not even in the top forty rainiest cities in the US? And considering when it does rain it tends to be light and misty - nobody uses umbrellas here.

Get her something more useful - there's several guidebooks about relocating to Seattle that give lots of helpful info - check Amazon.com. Hiking books as well. A Senseo coffeemaker would be nice. Just don't look like fools - don't get her umbrellas.

A raincoat
A pair of those really cute rain boots
Theraflu
A big soup mug and a supply of chicken noodle and tomato soup...ahhhh...what's more comforting on a rainy day than a big cup of soup....don't forget the crackers and a can opener
An assortment of coffees and teas

You could all go together and do a gift basket full of things like this. Sort of a care package.
