It's a dog-eat-dog culture here (in the US overall). And money rules - ask our politicians.
Don't get caught up in any superficialism in the schools, love. But in general we're a pretty nice group of people. California's laid back and beautiful, and depending on what part of the state you go to, you'll get a kick out of the palm trees (it's a culture shock). Good luck. |

The schools are worse in USA than in England - student attainment is worse in USA and they're also more dangerous places than UK schools. California is the most superficial state in the USA, they take "style over substance" to another level - for example, they pay to have their toes shortened for vanity reasons. Insane. |

It depends on where you live in California. If you are going to Hollywood then that is a whole different world compared to the rest of California...
If you are just going to any other town, then it is just like that...Any other town, and you will adjust. |

I pity you. I've been to North America a number of times. The best thing is the weather and the vistas. The worst thing? A bunch of materialistic, ignorant, gun toting psychos who voted for a moron TWICE live there.
Trust me, you'll like it. England is pretty much just a little try hard version of America now anyway. There isn't much of their soulless culture we haven't desparately tried to inflict on ourselves.
The best thing for me is the space. You'll understand when you arrive, but the whole country is just a huge open space, and everything is bright and colourful. People will seem friendly at first, but just wait till you meet a 'typical' californian, or even worse, a patriot. Ugly, ugly, ugly. |

People always tell you "that the US isn't different to the UK"!!! Who are these people??!!! Do they live in Brighton and holiday in Los Angeles and see no difference!!! |

America is different depending on where you live. California, is a very loose America. People are free spirited and indulge in many ungodly things. California is known for it's homosexual population and earthquakes. It is hard to buy property there and it is expensive. The schools are like everywhere else, it depends on where you live and how much you can afford. Lots of gangs in California. Yes, America is very different from the UK. The loyalty that exist there isn't here, everyone is busy trying to succeed that no one care about anyone else. Families are deteriorating for that reason. Crimes are like war in the middle east. Sexual sin and drug use is rampant. Sounds bleak...huh? Didn't to burst your bubble, most people come for the freedom, and the possibly to live large but on the grand scale few succeed and the economy is making the gap in the have and have nots even wider as I speak. Check out some website on the place you are going and you be the judge. Know that life is where you make it. Belive in God, thru Jesus and you'll be okay. |

I've been to america, it is very different from Britain, but overall the two do sort of equal out, some things are worse there, some things are worse here. Weather is better though! |

Well the public schools here are pretty bad and we have a high crime rate. Most of the people are pretty nice though and I'll bet they'll like you with your British accent. |

I dont know much about the USA but I should think the experienced gained would be invaluable, its not what we do we regret its what we dont do and could have done. The only thing that would concern me is there is no NHS! |

Well I think the first think you'll notice is the climate. It never snows in California except in the mountains. It never rains during the Summer! Along the coast it's pretty nice, just a little chilly in the Winter and not too hot in the Summer.
There are two major population centers, one is around Los Angeles (which we call 'Southern California') and the other around San Francisco (which we call 'Northern California', even though it's really about the middle). I like the San Francisco area better, and that's where I live. We have seven million people here, but we have more permanent open space than any area of this size in the world, so it doesn't seem quite that big. The city of San Francisco itself is interesting, and we also have an ocean and pretty hills. It costs a lot to live here because everyone wants to live here.
California is very diverse. We have people here from everywhere. Our culture is made up from all of their cultures. We have great restaurants with foods from all over the world. It is also geographically diverse, with seashore, mountains, desert, farmland, etc. etc. The redwood forests are very beautiful. There are lots of things to do and places to go on weekends.
I think you'll like it! |

Tell your Mom to go alone. The united States was a great country a while a go, now it is becoming a fascist country. You can get arrested without a reason, and get tortured. Once people accept such laws and don´t protest, things tend to go for the worst. |

America has something for everyone. California is very different depending on which part of California you are moving to. I just met a couple that moved to San Francisco from the U.K. and they love it! They have been living in SF for a year and a half. From my experience, you will find the U.S. to be a lot less formal in every way. Also, since the dollar has been so week, everything you buy will seem cheap to you.
Just remember to have a positive attitude when you move. I have moved a lot. When someone asks you, "do you like living in San Francisco(?)? Just say yes whether you do or not. People have pride in where they live no matter its location. They are more likely to take you in and show you the ropes if you show how much you enjoy their area. It will soon become your own! Good Luck! |
