The July 1 smoking ban applies to England, not New York - we have had no smoking in restaurants, office buildings, etc. for years. Walk past office buildings in Manhattan between 9 and 5 on a very cold, or wet, or windy day - you'll see people freezing, gathered together outside the buildings, smoking. They used to have "smoking sections" in restaurants and theatrers, - how silly. Having a no -smoking section in a restaurant is like having a no-peeing section in a swimming pool.

i stay in scotland and the smoking ban started ages ago it not as bad as you think it will be

Yeah but somking should be banned all together!
The only reason it's alowed is because the goverment get quite a large cut in it!
Peoples health is at risk!

i think its a load of crap if smoking is such a big problem to everyone why dont they stop making the bloody things but then i suppose the government would properly be skint

Since this is in the New York City section, I guess I have the right to answer. NYC banned smoking in restaurants, bars, clubs, etc a number of years ago and I love it. I used to dislike going out at night only because of the smoke. It hurt my eyes, burned my throat and I would smell like an ash tray after coming home. Since the smoking ban, nightlife has never been better. The smokers get to puff away outside (a good excuse to flirt with other smokers) and the rest of us can party in clean air. Works for me in the NYC.

Well i don't know what my opinions on july 1st will be until it arrives. I only know what my opinions are today- but my opinions don't alter much so i expect they will be the same.

I don't see how we are idiots as you asked this under the topic NEW YORK CITY...maybe if you had specified England it would have helped a bit. We have had a smoking ban for a few years now and I LOVE IT!

I am a non smoker that is of the opinion that it is an infringement on your human rights and that of the owners of establishments who wish to allow smoking on their premises(and there are many of them!) If people do'nt want to go in a non smoking establishment then they can chose one that bans it so all people are catered for.As your first poster said, do the same for alchohol and we wo'nt mind.
