When I say Ohio...??...?

What comes to mind?

1) Bountiful water and green fauna, all items missed by many living in the Southwest. Great rivers like the Ohio and the Maumee and many charming rivers, some having carved spectacular canyons. Lake Erie, which warms into the high 70s in the summer. Four seasons: Spring reawakening with maple festivals, summer picnics and trips to the beach along Lake Erie, great thunderstorms, leaf turn in the fall, beautifully gentle snowstorms and furious blizzards, snowmen, snow angels and three-hour snowball fights.

2) Great athletic traditions -- including especially football, basketball and baseball. King James is great partially because he was a two-sport athlete out of love -- he knows how to take and give a hit. He played football his senior year even as he was an acknowledged No. 1 NBA draft pick. The Buckeyes -- few states of Ohio's size have a single university that generally is the aspiration destination for its greatest high school athletes.

3) Livable big cities. Very low relative housing costs and yet some of the greatest cultural institutions in the world. In the Cleveland area, attending a Christmas program of the Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall or visiting Holden Arboretum are very joyful experiences. Great art museums in Cleveland, Toledo, Dayton and Cincinnati. The U.S. Air Force Museum in Dayton is the greatest military aircraft museum in the world, and you can visit the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, the actual 60 acres where the Wright Brothers perfected and flew the first airplane as opposed to the powered glider that they tested at Kitty Hawk. Dayton is the birthplace of powered flight, and the first real airplane is not at the Smithsonian, but at Carillon Historic Park in Dayton.

4) Charming rural towns and villages, including several Amish communities. The Wilds is one of the world's most spectacular animal conservation centers, and yet is not well known even by most Ohioans. It's sunset safari tour offers the only way I know of to pet a rhinoceros.

5) The people are diverse and very friendly. Drivers generally are extremely courteous and rarely do you hear a horn on Ohio streets and roads.

6) A once vibrant industrial economy imperiled by short-sighted federal policies.

7) Decades of some of the worst political leadership in the nation, including especially our Senators and Congresspersons.

When I think of Ohio, i think of happiness. The people there seem so happy, so that's one thing that comes to mind. And, the people there tend to have very high educations, and a lot of them are very witty!

It's a decent state!
