Mardi Gras
January 6 - February 5, 2008
The official beginning of the Mardi Gras season is Jan 6, which is called Twelfth Night (12 days after Christmas). On that cold night, a krewe called Phunny Phorty Phellows has their drunken streetcar parade down St. Charles Ave. Most of the big parades start two Fridays before Mardi Gras Day. From this point on, parades will happen everyday until Fat Tuesday. |

Mardi Gras 2008 will take place on February 5, 2008... woohoo it will be a cold one!
If you count backwards 7 Tuesdays from Easter Sunday, that will give you Mardi Gras day. Mardi Gras celebrations start 2 weeks prior to that day. So in 2008 parades will start running probably around January 19th. If you are interested in visiting New Orleans for Mardi Gras, make your arrangements now! Rooms book quick, and probably are quite filled by now.

Mardi Gras is a different date every year; in 2008 it will fall on Feb. 5. It is usually in Feb. and occurs 46 days before Easter. Mardi Gras means "Fat Tuesday" in French, and is the final day of the ENTIRE Carnival season, which begins on Jan. 6, Twelfth Night. The parades in Orleans Parish start about 2 weeks prior to Mardi Gras.
Mardi Gras is only celebrated/observed in extreme South Louisiana; it is not observed north of Baton Rouge. |

Feb.5 is Fat Tuesday this coming year. If you go I suggest staying outside of the city as rooms are hard to find. Gulf Port Mississippi is nice and only a hour away. |
