June 21 - Sep 23

These are the official dates of summer in the entire Northern Hemisphere. Some people in this region consider summer to include May and June, based on weather. Other people refer to "summer" based on the time of summer vacation for school (ie: end of June to end of August)

I'm not quiet sure of the start dates but its definitely June to Sometime in August. It's still hot in September but not considered summer. As far as the other answers...June through Sept??????? I dont know of any state that has 4 months of summer!!! And dude that said may, I dont know where you lived "for a few years" but it wasn't THE CITY. It's not SUMMER in may, usually it rains all may.
I've lived here all my life.

memorial day weekend to labor day weekend.

The previous post is pretty accurate representation of recent years here in NYC. Good job Rosie.
As a general guide, June, July, and Aug should be considered the 'core' summer mos here and May/Sept should be considered the 'fringe' mos when it can go either way.

you must live below the equator, the months are pretty much reversed for us. your summer is our winter, and vice versa. if you live in australia, im jealous, i want to have a pool party for christmas one year :-p

(early) May - (late) Sept. I used to live there for a few years so if you're asking for opinion ... these are summer months. This is mostly NYC area that I'm referring to -- upstate NY will feel more like spring and fall during some of that time period.

Regardless of the calendar, NY weather tends to be all over the place all year, we locals check the weather report each morning to figure out what to wear. This year we've had snow in April & warm days in January, no extremes so far, just unusual days here & there.

Here's the "normal" trend:
January - snow & sleet
February - ditto, freeze your buns off
March - hopefully start thawing, still cold though
April - warmer, but you'll still need a jacket
May - rain, rain & more rain, some warm days, some cold days
June - still more rain, equal chance spring or summer days
July - muggy heat
August - muggy heat, sometimes ridiculously so
September - usually the best weather, even if it tends to rain a bit
October - fabulous weather, but you need a light jacket
November - cold, but not too much
December - colder, dig out the winter gear, light snow common

We locals consider summer to be July and August. In our minds, it begins the weekend of July 4 (Independence Day) and ends the day after Labor Day which is the first Monday in September. This is the calendar that we grew up with through school and continues in our work life.

Summer days are hot and very HUMID here. So far, we have had cooler weather and much rain (7 days so far, with severe flooding in suburbs) as we anticipate July 4 holiday.

June, July and August and the middle of September, but it is usually so warm that one can enjoy a very hot, hot or medium hot time through the middle of October sometimes. You can never tell. My sister and I went the 3rd week in August which should be brutally hot a couple of years ago and it only got as high as 75 F. We were thrilled, but that's VERY unusual.
