When you think of the state of Texas, what comes to mind?

im from texas! and i do not have an accent! and the gun happy thing, i hate guns, but then again im from dallas, so maybe someone from the country or small town
well the state stuff

texas has one the most complicated high system in america..
the only state to be its own country (civil war)
texas' flag is the only flag that can fly as high as the american flag

"Just shoot me now"

Those are the words my daughter groaned when we crossed the state line from Louisiana and she spotted the mileage sign!
(Teenagers hate road trips with parents).

So many things Texas brings to mind.
* Galveston; what a beautiful island (one of my favourite places in all of the US).
* And the drive down the Gulf coast.
* How Dallas shone in the sun - all modern gleaming steel and glass.
And who can ever think of Dallas and not remember the tragedy that struck at the heart of a nation in this city (and the Ewing clan too).
* The fiasco that was Waco.
* The beauty of the stark and barren panhandle.
* The colour and culture of El Paso.
* Isolated oil rigs scattered across barren land.
* The warmth of the worn stone of the Alamo fortress and our lunch on the River Walk in lovely San Antonio.
* The states awful record for the capital punishment of African Americans.
* But one of the things that most stands out is the Texans unwavering pride in their state.

I have always lived in California, but have visited Texas many times. Mostly Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston. I have driven completely across Texas a couple of times.
