Why do people always recommend the large department stores in Manhattan?

As a New Yorker, I think those large stores are just like the stores you find in every other place.

If you want some place uniquely New York, you might want to try going to Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side (North of 72nd Street) or Prince or Spring Streets in Soho.

Those are more New York kinds of places to shop.

So! You will be going to the Big Fat City, well to be honest there are so many places you can shop and get great bargains on every sort of thing, that the only thing I can recommend to you is. Shop for prices like all us New Yorkers do.

NBA Store (for the basketball fan)
Disney Store
FAO Schwartz
Any store in the Manhattan Mall and the Time Warner Center
The Atrium at Trump Tower
Hershey Store (for anyone with a sweet tooth)
and finally the souvenir shop.

I loved Bloomingdale's when I was in New York in July, It has everything you want under 1 roof, Don't forget to pick up a little brown bag while your in there. And com paired to the UK it's very inexpensive. I hope you have as much fun there as I did.
