Where Should I Move To?

So eventually I will be moving out of my parent's house, But if I'm going to move I want to make it worth it.

I hate living In Virginia. I use to want to move up to my home state of New York but decided not there either. I wanted something New.

Here is some things Id like of the place I move to:
Cool Temperatures.
A lot Of Rain/Snow/Wind
Democratic (I'm very political)
An area that you wont need a car all the time for. A store, a school, entertainment is all a walk or bike ride away. But not a city.

And of course where the economy is still doing alright.

I know this is a very broad question But there is a lot of places and I just don't have the money to check them all out before moving to one.

So if you live in an area that sounds kinda like what I just said, Lemme know.

Thank You

Alot of people are saying Portland & Seattle. can anyone tell me more about the area? typical prices for food and stuff.

(also about the lady that pointed out i like walking in the rain.....well yes i like to walk in the snow and rain. Its really relaxing for me. walking and listening to all the pattering rain)

Yes, San Francisco, Portland or Seattle. Even Vancouver is a really good option. I'm in SF now and it's: cold and raining (we have a lot of wind and cooler temperatures; snow is an easy drive to the Sierras), the economy is doing okay, I sold my car earlier this year (now we only have 1 for the two of us), we're definitely liberal and we're in a very progressive tech 'bubble' -- it's not really a 'city' in that it's a collection of neighborhoods. Sure there is a central downtown but, everything is really close enough for walking or riding or public transportation. It's not for everyone but I like it here.

A couple of suggestions for you, but you'd be better off telling us a little more about what you like to DO. Are you a skier? Mountain biker? Like to hike? Want access to a lot of live music? Clubbing? Need access to good beer? Bowling alleys? Arty movies? Buddhist centers? What do you need from your community and what would you like to contribute? All this will help us narrow our suggestions. In any case, I have two:
1) YES, Portland is really fantastic. Check out the Portland Bridges site to explore the various neighborhoods. You'll want to live within walking distance to the MAX line. With that and a bike you won't need a car at all. It's a wonderful, liberal, artsy place and as a Democrat you'll probably love it. Rarely snows in the city, however, if that's a priority. It's on Amtrak, too, and has an international airport served by the MAX line.
2) On the flip side, Colorado gets lots of snow. There are several Democratic enclaves. If you want better access to city amenities, you'd look at what's called the Front Range (anything on the plains east of the Rockies). Denver is fine if you like cities. Has good light rail. But between Denver and Portland, I'd pick the latter. Boulder is great, but expensive. Golden is probably best down there. But I'd recommend the mountains. Depends on your priorities. Summit County includes the region between the towns of Silverthorne and Breckenridge. Ski country 1-1/2 hours west of Denver at 9000'. Fairly expensive, but if you're young and don't mind renting a room in a house or having roommates, it's a great experience. Bike paths everywhere. A free bus. Hiking out your back door. Lots of young people. Other areas to check out in Colorado are Durango (a great college town) and Steamboat Springs.

As always, craigslist is useful to check out housing prices.
Good luck!

But help us out with more specifics!

well theres alot of places in canada like New Westminister, which is pretty muc atached to Vancover city but still different, it does rain alot and does get snow in winter, it's by the ocean and it's own little community with schools, colleges, unversitys, movie theaters, grocery stores and sushi bars and restaurants and cute shops everywhere, but it is attached to a city

Calgary and edmonton too but it's a city

Montreal would be perfect but it's a city,

For towns I would suggest: Beaumont, Leduc, Red deer (all in alberta) theres tons!! i guess you just have to know where you wanna work

Stephanie
Wow this says NY lol..then I saw you dont want to move there...Massachusetts?

You should come to Canada then, we have a lot of cool temperatures... This said if you'd rather have rain than snow in the winter time, British Columbia (BC) is the place to be, you would simply have to go to the mountains to get to the snow (lots of ski resorts).
Canada is very democratic compared to the US, but we are not without our faults in our system. Voicing your opinion is a common thing here and the worst we do is disagree.
Vancouver city suburbs might be good for you... I think, just check it out with these links:

or Chicago, Illinois.

Both fulfill all of your criteria!

And, they're both really great, clean, fun cities. I've lived in both. =)

Good question. It can be asked this way too: "Should I remain where I currently live?" Your questions appears to be relative to living somewhere in the U.S. A recent article discussed the most liveable places. Economic opportunities should be an important consideration in your deliberations. Unless you have a universal skill, nurse, skilled mechanic, etc. that allows you to work anywhere you need to consider how you will earn an income whereever you move to. If you are pursuing a skill then choose a location that will assist your getting the best skill - best recognized - so you can sell your services later.
1. Do I have a marketable skill? Does the area support the training I will pursue?
2. If training isn't your bag - then employability in the area should be a concern unless you are independently wealthy or have a skill.
3. What connections will you have there? Are you good at developing connections and positive friendships? Are there organizations that offer opportunities in the area that will increase your connections and help you become a part of the community?
4. It depends on how anonymous you want to be? Small towns, etc. will draw notice to a newcomer even if you do not notice it. Larger urban areas allow you to blend in quickly, but close ties are also harder to establish in such busy places where time is a premium and it is hard to establish an identity or reputation.
These categories can be researched on line using Yahoo Search.

We have a transit system (bus, trolly, light rail) in the Puget Sound area. Seattle is very hilly and very crowded, but has a lot of charisma. Portland, OR also has a transit system, and seems a little more calm than Seattle, but there are other outer areas to explore too. It's cheaper to live south of Seattle, but if you want to be within walking distance to the movie theater, grocery store, etc, you are going to have to live in the city. You are going to have to compromise a bit on your commute. Good luck.

western massachusetts is all of those things, and there are some really nice towns that have a lot of things going on, but they're not like cities or like places in the middle of nowhere in the country. western mass seems perfect for you. oh and they're very democratic there.

Blair.
Colorado. Except I don't understand how you can have snow and rain and walk/ride your bike to places. Thats kind of contradicting what you just said!
