Check out what's playing on Broadway. Take advantage of all the ethnic foods available. For a really different experience, go down to the bottom tip of Brooklyn, to the Brighton Beach area. (I'm pretty sure there's a subway line that goes there). It's a totally Russian neighborhood. Take in the stores and the sights...shop the street vendors...enjoy Russian food at one of the many restaurants. You're a few blocks from the ocean and can stroll the boardwalk. Honestly, it feels like you're in another country!

And by the way, this is the "new" NY. It's safe, it's clean and the people are friendly!

Do all the suggested tours including the sight seeing tour bus, well worth the money, you can hop on and off as you please, The helicopter ride around the statue of liberty is great.

WheeeeWhaaaaa
1. Just walk up Park Avenue from 23rd street to 57th.
2. See the inside of Grand Central Station on a sunny day.
3. See a show at Lincoln Center.

Pick up a Time Out NYC guide as soon as you arrive. It will have up to the minute listings of everything to do in the city that suits all tastes. It will recommend the regular things like restaurants and museums but will also tell you special events going on that only the locals will be aware of that won't show up in guide books.

The best thing about NY is the view from the Saten Island Ferry.

I really enjoyed the Frick Collection. As well as having a great collection of Art the building is just beautiful. There is an area with a pond (indoors) where you can sit, a little oasis.

The Staten Island Ferry connects Manhattan with Staten Island. It's free, and it gives a reasonable view of the Statue of Liberty on the way. Staten Island itself is worth looking round: it's much closer to "an ordinary American town" than anything you'll see in Manhattan.

Get over to the Ed Sulivan Theatre on Broadway at 54th for the LateShow with David Letterman. Ya gotta be there at 0h early thirty for a 8 hour wait for noon tickets for the 4pm show! The 1st few git in, the rest git turned away!In Australia we only git 2 nites a week because it's preempted by a really lame game show called Quizmania.
