Where did most katrina victims evacuate to

I want everyone to know that those cruel answers are terribly hurtful. Just in case you care. Heaven forbid that you should ever need the kindness of strangers in your life.

In answer to the question, when the negligently-designed federal levees broke (which is what flooded New Orleans--not Katrina), most New Orleanians had completed a highly successful evacuation to many, many parts of the world. I personally called hotels immediately after I learned the storm was heading here (7 a.m. Saturday) and the nearest I could get was in West Memphis, TN. From there we went to north Louisiana (we couldn't get south of Jackson, MS because there were no services available), then to further south in Louisina, then finally back to N.O. I lived in three different places in N.O. before finally returning to my rebuilt home 10 months ago.

Anyone trying to drive around Baton Rouge, Louisiana after Katrina would say that everyone went there! I know that a lot of people went to Houston, but people went to all 50 states, especially if there was a relative or friend to offer shelter. I went to Memphis and stayed in a hotel. We were there for a month!

You know sometimes I'm amazed at how cruel and downright evil many people can be. The people of New Orleans who evacuated to other cities for the most part were utterly impoverished and obviously didn't have vehicles and for the most part were elderly. Of course a few bad apples left with them and have caused problems in a couple of places (Houston) for example. I guess I forgot what a crime free paradise on earth Houston was before Katrina evacuees arrived.

I don't really know why all of these people are saying Houston. The majority of people who evacuated before the storm came up North to Livingston Parish, the Baton Rouge Parishes, and other surrounding parishes. We had shelters set up all around here. Although we were hit by Katrina it was not nearly as bad as further down south.

It was the people who were rescued after Katrina from New Orleans who were sent to Houston, Atlanta, and other major cities. But I still think that a majority of people are in Baton Rouge now. I am still hopeful that many will go back...not b/c of crime, but to help New Orleans get back to what it used to be!

Hope this helps!

New Orleans had a population of about 1,400,000 at the time Katrina struck and - despite a common myth - more than 90 percent of us left before the storm approached the coast of Louisiana. About half of those who did not (or could not) leave town went to the Superdome, which was the designated shelter.

The ones who evacuated before the storm arrived were scattered across the south (sometimes farter away). People drove until they could find a place to stay, and the hotels for 400 miles around New Orleans were full.

The people at the Superdome were trapped by high water when the federallly-built levee system failed, and the flood waters pushed the people who stayed in their homes toward higher ground. Most of them (about 20,000) ended up at the Convention Center on the riverfront, which did not flood.

Help finally arrived a week later, and most (not all) of the people at the Superdome and Convention Center were transported to Houston. However, they were (as mentioned above) only 5 to 10 percent of New Orleans' pre-Katrina population.

The people who evacuated weren't victims... they were survivors.

The 'victims' didn't evacuate...

But if you mean where did most people go when they decided to evacuate before the storm, then Houston is probably right. People went all over the country, though... other parts of Texas, throughout the South in Mississippi and Georgia, etc. Many went further north to just about any city you can imagine...

Maybe someday everyone will get to come home :)
