~Bodie (located outside Bridgeport, California) is one of the best preserved ghost towns in the United States. It is located off of a old, unpaved road and is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is really interesting with it's rich history and deep rooted superstitions (legend says not to take anything or face eternal bad luck).
~Virginia City (located outside Lake Tahoe, California) is fun and full of old west appeal. It was the town that Wyatt Earp rode into in the beginning of "Tombstone". It's a bit of tourist town with lots of shops, restaurants and casinos, but, the breathtaking views will really impress you.
~Old Tucson (Arizona) is another touristy ghost town, but, worth the travel! All of Arizona is full of great sites and history.
IMO, Bodie is the best! You will feel like you're back in the 1800's and it will leave you feeling a bit haunted afterwards. |

I'm kind of partial to the old west when I think of ghost towns, but they're all over the place. Check out the site below and have fun! Just watch your step...
P.S. The site listed over 200 in Arizona alone! Just driving the highways there you can "hear" the stagecoaches and see the trains chugging away. I did Tombstone and the outlying area - enjoyed it (even if it was touristy.) I could just imagine... |

Any of the gold mining areas around the Rocky Mountains. Cattle trails around Denver to Colorado and Nevada and the area around Abilene also might be a good starting point.
You could try typing "Multimap" or "Mapquest" and "Old West towns" without the quotation marks into Google and other search engines. But don't be fooled by towns and places shown in Western type films as most are purpose built film sets. |

My favorite ghost town is Bodie. Bodie is in eastern California, near the Nevada border. Central California and desert regions in the south have a lot of gold rush era settlements and ghost towns. I have heard a lot about Calico in California, but haven't been there. There are also a lot of off the beaten path ghost towns to see in Nevada. This is my favorite site with Nevada ghost town info: http://nvghosttowns.topcities.com/ |

Find a book on Ghost Towns in America. That way you'll get descriptions and can choose the best one's for your tastes.
California, Nevada, and Arizona have ghost towns.
Good luck. Sounds like fun. |
