Where should I go to for a Road Trip?

I live in Oregon, and this summer I'm going on a roadtrip with some friends, and they pretty much told me to pick the stops and the main destination. We have a timeframe of about a week, so about a 2,000 mile round trip or less.

Where should we go? North to Canada? South to California? East to Colorado?

Some possible things I was thinking about is postponing the trip until about September and heading up to Seattle for the Bumbershoot, a large music festival there.

Any feedback or ideas? I'm open to anything that sounds fun.

It's all about YOU and what YOU want, and what excites YOU... however if you are asking ME what I would do...

I've always thought it quite thrilling to sometimes live life on edge... closing my eyes and letting my finger land on the globe or map and try to see were I can get to in x amount of time...

it all depends on if you are open to adventure and surprise, whether it be good or bad... or if you prefer 'safe' and calculated.

If you like snow go to where there is snow, If you like hiking go to where you can hike... but if you are open and free.... let the chips fly as they may and live baby!!!

OK. Get one of those game pieces, the spinner. And then spin it to see which way to go. Have it marked with North, South, East, West.

Then just spin when you get to a crossroads.

You can make more rules as you go.

Or be safe and just travel the length of the Sierra Nevada. Start at Crater Lake and go all the way down to Mammoth and Mono Lake. Then down into the desert, to the Colorado River. Lassen, Sequioa, Kings Canyon...etc...

The idea of a road trip, in my mind, is to see things that you haven't seen, to find out what the world 'out there' is like.

EXPLORE! And be willing to change direction and plans. Take lots of pictures.

Or maybe drive up into Alaska. Or try Utah.

See? Too many choices unless you decide where to head. Play the game. Make up rules and follow the spinning pointer, or a roll of the dice.

Or just save gas and walk around town. Being bored is cheap.

If you like the outdoors... try Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies... it's spectacular.

One suggestion would be to head north along the coast up to the Olympic area in Washington. There's tons to do there and the scenery is awesome. You can take your car on a ferry from there and go to Vancouver Island and drive all over from there. We did it a few years ago and had a great time.

The principal of a road trip is get in and drive, if you plan it it is a vacation.

Drive to New York City. Take a long time on the drive, by going through Texas., See all the sites between here and NYC. THEn explore NYC.
I did this kind of trip in 1996./ Just don't get lost in the Bronx after midnight when your car is about out of gas.

All of the above possibilities seem interesting.

I'd like to mount a campaign to encourage people not to go anywhere. Travel has become so expensive and unpleasant that it's hard to understand why people don't stay home.
Why are we crowding our highways and airports to get someplace else? Newspapers and magazines are filled with ads trying to get us to travel. They want us to go somewhere - anywhere but home
