Where should I move, help PLEASE!? |
My and my mom are questioning places to move.
She wants sunny weather, water, and not too expensive.
I want chilly weather nothing under 30 degrees, lots of culture, and a big city atmosphere with lots of art
We live in Florida now, but we both hate it.
Too hot.
She wants either San Fran, Key West, maybe Savannah.
I want Portland, Boston, maybe San Fran, and Savannah.
Plus I LOVE chicago but she says it is too cold.
So any suggestions? Additional Details keep giving me suggestions. I asked my mom about jersey and she has this stereotype of it. I know I would NEVER want to livein southern cali, sorry, I'm not all fake n' bake! keep helping! |

I was born and raised in California (got out as soon as I could)
Before moving here to the Philippines I lived in North Carolina for 7 years and I love it there.
Nice weather (all four seasons) it does get under 30 in the winter but it is well worth it. |

prefect spot, while station at Ft. Benning, Ga the local area is beautiful and full of history, Atlanta is about 1 hour away, Columbus is right there, I would live on the Alabama side of the boarder, less expensive, and best of all the weather is wonderful |

Portland Maine or Portland Oregon? In Maine you will suffer from the cold, but you'll be close to the ocean. In Oregon they have a fair amount of rain, but it's very nice there. Lots of places in Oregon that would be close by for you to enjoy. You'd be near the Pacific Coast.
San Francisco is a beautiful place but expensive. They get lots of rain.
Boston--gets those Nor'easters. Extremely high cost of living. I don't know if this is still true or not, but they used to have the highest car insurance anywhere.
NY--avoid Long Island. Very pretty, but has gotten over-populated and expensive. Traffic is murder regardless of whether you live in the city or on the North or South Shores. Everyone considers the rest of NY "upstate" but that's a lot of territory. Binghamton, Syracuse area is dairy country--rolling hills, skiing nearby, but Syracuse does get those lake effect winter storms. Even further north to Watertown and up to Lake Placid you'll get bad storms. Albany, Poughkeepsie, Schenectedy (?sp) nice area. Settled by the Dutch. I don't know much about Rochester area.
Virginia and Tennessee are beautiful places. TN doesn't have a state income tax and I know at least from Bristol (the state line separating the two states runs down the middle of their main street) to Knoxville has water and electricity from the TN Valley Authority which means very cheap power.
Raleigh/Durham area of NC is a growing area for retired people so has a lot to offer. I don't know if that's had an effect on property values, etc. SC is very nice--esp. Charleston--but hot and humid.
Actually I read a few months ago that Coralville Iowa is the #1 spot to live when all the rankings were considered. I was particularly interested in this because I know someone living there and they love it. They're very happy with the standard of living. It's close to Des Moines which is where the Univ of Iowa is so you know you'll get the culture.
Denver is nice, has lots to offer, but they do get some wicked winter storms. I've been stranded there during them, heard horror stories from friends forced to "live" in the airport during the storms, and my closest friend's sister lives there and he's told me the same things.
Why not do a search of the cities the people have given you and check out housing costs and other factors? If you like one, maybe you could take a couple days and visit and get a feel for the place. |

I live in Chicago and I hate the cold like you wouldn't believe but let me tell you: Chicago is worth it. I've lived in Boston and I've lived in California (both for school, I grew up in Chicago) and I can honestly say I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. The people are fantastic (completely welcoming and down-to-earth), the culture is lively and fun, the entire city comes out in the summer to sail/use the beaches/parks. It's literally visually like a warmer climate in the summer, with crystal clear blue water and everyone outside. The falls are reminiscent of the falls in the northeast; the colors are breathtaking. Winter really isn't all that bad, honestly. The entire city gets completely crazy about Christmas, the the snow really only sets the mood even more. I like living in an area with real winters more than I liked living in California, at least. And spring is wonderful; completely lush and green. Honestly, you should move to Chicago. Come visit here with your mom, eat some Lou Malnati's deep dish pizza, go to a cubs game, go shopping in old town/lincoln park, and just talk to some people. I guarantee your mom will come around. I could never imagine living anywhere else. |

San Diego has the best year round weather bar none. i don't live there but i've noticed that throught he course of a year the average tempreature varies only 12 degrees from hottest average to coldest average. it is the most consistant weather in the US. The cost to live there is another story, its one of the more expensive areas to live in the country.
I reside in Phoenix, formerly of Chicago. Chicago has miserable summers, and miserable winters, as far as weather goes. other than that i love Chicago and miss it, except for the weather.
Arizona, though you probably wouldn't guess, has very interesting climates. since it is considered a desert state most people write it off as hot barron land. Arizona has the countries largest Ponderosa Pine forest, a volcano field, high and low desert and more boat owners per capita than any other state. most of the state is a national park or forest of some sort, offering near endless amounts of outdoor activities. the lack of humidity creates what is commonly known as a Dry Heat. though i cannot argue that 115 degrees is hot, its more bareable than 95 and humid. i can't stand humidity and the difference between dry heat and humid heat is like night and day. also the hot months go away and the other 8 or 9 months are perfect. in Phoenix homes are affordable, roads are nice, employment is abundant and a short drive in any direction puts you in a national park, and usually up into the mountains. the Mountain areas are nice, in the winter they receive snow, so you have the added ebnifit of enjoying snow, but not waking up to have to shovel it before you go to work. you can visit winter with a 2 hours drive and return to your 70 degree neighborhood and have a cook out on Thanksgiving.
Arizona doesn't receive Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Earthquakes, Blizzards etc. Moonsoon season in July is exciting and fun. |

have you thought about myrtle beach. its a smaller city but has the sun and surf your mom wants and the cooler weather int he winter you want. you get off the main drag or the strip and the preices really arent that bad. lots of cheap shops and good food. its not too far from charleston sc, columbia sc, florence sc and wilmington nc. all nice cities. columbia and charleston being the largest in the immediate area. |

Well, I live near Asheville, NC and it is great here. We have the warm weather that your mother would love, nice winter weather, we average 3-4 good snowfalls a year, and that is about it, so you could have your cold weather that you like, there are a couple of good lakes close by, which can satisfy her need for water, and Asheville has mountains, beautiful scenery, and a great cultural base and art galleries. If you think that Asheville is too expensive, the surrounding counties are still affordable to live in, and Asheville would only be about a 20-30 minute drive... |

Chicago is a fun city, but indeed it does get extremely cold in winter. As for Key West and Savannah, those places will be just as hot as Florida.
I personally think North Carolina would be perfect for you and your mom. North Carolina is a nice state, with great weather. It's warm and sunny in the summer, and just nice during winter. Raleigh, which is the capital is one of the nicest cities I have been to. I have relatives who live there, and it's a nice area. I've visited a lot, and would like to live there one day. It's nicknamed the "City of Oaks" because of all the trees. If your into sports, the area is very competitive with UNC, NC state and Duke universities all within a short drive of each other. Raleigh is in "The Triangle" area of North Carolina which is the cities of Durham - Chapel Hill and Raleigh. The triangle area is one of the most educated regions in the U.S.
"The Triangle's population is among the most educated in the United States, with one of the highest number of Ph.D.s per capita."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Triangle_(North_Carolina)
It's a clean city with a low crime rate. Homes are not expensive, as there is a lot of growth in the area. For an average sized city, Raleigh has a big city atmosphere, especially in the downtown area. There are several art museums in Raleigh including Ackland art museum, the NC museum of art, the NC council of the arts, Exploris and many others. Raleigh is also a diverse city with a lot of culture. You will meet people from all over in Raleigh. The area is less than 3 hours from the mountains in the west, and the ocean to the east. Myrtle Beach is only 3 1/2 hours away.
If you want to learn more about Raleigh, check out these websites:
http://www.visitraleigh.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raleigh,_North_Carolina
I know Raleigh may not be a place you would expect someone to reccomend but it really is a nice city, and people are friendly there.
Good luck in finding a new places to live! I hope this helped :-) |

Denver Colorado. my girlfriend and I are moving to Colorado from Arizona, AZ is just way too hot and expencive, colorado will be MUCH less expencive then florida and it has all the qualitys that you are both looking for. it is warm in the summer but never over like 90 and thats rare it is cool in the winter but your not trapped in snow all winter, you get just enough snow to be fun and then it melts away , there is lots to do and the cost of living is still really decent. were risking everything to move there, its really a great state. |

money and finance picked these places.
key west is still way hot and expensive.
chicago is def. cold.
You guys should figure out a budget.. decide the job situation and where you might go to get one... make a list of questions for eachother to fill out... listing "wants" in order of importance.
Nobody can pick it for you.. but I must tell you that it is refreshing to hear someone sound like they have a great relationship with their mother. I wish you great luck on your adventure! You will have great fun and a whole new world opened up to you and for that it doesn't matter where you move! Think of the possibilities.. wow.. I envy you! lol.. Good luck!!
P.S. I agree with the other poster.. New Jersey doesn't get too cold nor too hot.. you can pick any city up and down the coast. It's only an hour from Phila. and two hours from New York and that's South Jersey.. if you are on the beach in Northern Jersey you are only moments away from New York.. I"d suggest this to make you both happy. |
