Where to Live in Calfornia?

Im 19 now and am living at home in Alabama and working two jobs so that I can save money to move to California in 7 months.

I orginally wanted to move to San Francisco but its very expensive to live in the city there. So what are some other cities in California that I can enjoy both the city and beach life close to each other? Preferably one where public transportation is good.
Additional Details
Im not worried about Earthquakes.

Public transportation is only decent in major cities in Calif. where the costs of living are higher in those cities. You will have to trade off. If you wish to stay around San Francisco Bay Area, your choices are the South Bay, the North Bay, and the East Bay. The North Bay is closest to the City, rents are still expense. The South Bay is nice and better and warmer temps, but public transportation is so-so and rents are high here like in the city. The East Bay is Hot in the summer, rents are cheaper, but public transportation is so-so here too. The East Bay does have easily accessible Bart going to the City. North of the City is expensive too and you definitely will need a car. I enjoy living in the South Bay because of the very moderate temperatures year round. The place is called San Jose aka. Silicon Valley. From San Jose, you have great beaches only 30 minutes away. I also like San Diego or Oceanside area. Sacramento gets very hot in the summer and forget LA, it's too crowded. You may want to consider the Monterrey Bay area near beaches and very nice.

Public Transportation is best in San Francisco.

All major Beach Cities have City Bus Transportation. I grew up in Huntington Beach...Nice. There's San Diego and Ventura as well. All areas are expensive (not like San Francisco) but all are good. I

LA area is cheaper than SF and warmer. SF beaches are cold and deadly. Looks like you will have to be near a large city if you want public transportation so I say look from Santa Barbara on south

San Diego. Warm, near the beach, the birds chirp louder, and people smile more, and it's beautiful.
Lots of resorts you can work at... probably easy to find jobs, people are more laid back... Good programs for higher education in Cali too.
San Fran is nice too, but it is expensive. The beaches are not warm. NorCal and SoCal are very different, that's what makes Cali great.

Do not live in SoCal (southern california).. it's too shallow.

Move to northern california... Big Sur is awesome but a little pricey.. Anywhere there is really expensive..

Pretty much everywhere in California cities are super expensive, especially compared to Alabama. I lived in LA for a while and my 2 bedroom apt was $2000 a month, not including cable, internet, electricity. If you want to live in the ghetto you can get a one bedroom apt for around $700 a month, but you'll get robbed daily, and if you have a car it'll get broken into/stolen regularly as well. Gas in LA is currently over $4 too. So if you live outside of LA you have to think about your commute into the city to work (which will take HOURS literally of stop and go traffic). I worked 16 miles from my house. I had to drive 5 miles to get to the interstate, 10 miles by interstate, and 1 mile to my job off the interstate and my commute was NEVER less than 2 hours coming/going. It normally averaged around 2 1/2 hours one way.

LA's train is ok, but doesn't take you to all of LA - just the downtown area. You'll have to probably use a bus to get to a train. But like I said, to live in the city is really expensive. I was lucky to get my cheap apt for $2000 a month in a decent area. It didn't have air conditioning either.

I would suggest looking on craigslist to get an idea of what the costs are and VISITING the area you want to live in. Find a job and a place to live BEFORE you move.

California is super expensive to live in, unless you live in the middle of the desert inland.

As for the folks talking about the fires and earthquakes. That is a regular occurance and something you just have to deal with if you want to live there. I llived through fires and quakes there. The fires make it difficult to breathe, and you're not guaranteed safe anywhere, but my place never burned down.

If you live close to the beach you can expect to pay about $2000+ for a one bedroom ghetto apt infested with roaches. You have to pay a lot to have a decent apt by the beach. There are lots of slumlords in LA too, so watch out.

everything in california is expensive buddy. i live in downtown hollywood. and my apartment rent is 2400 a month. i also had to save up just like you.

I would move to San DIego ! San Fran and LA are gettin to big and are becoming "hell holes" with crime on the rise and house prices being wayy to high!

San Diego is not too small and not to big and has everything that LA and Frisco have to offer . ANd if you do want to pay a visit to LA its only a 2 hour drive away !

hatin cuz my lipgloss is poppin
whater u do do not i repeat do not go to the LA san diego area ... they are having alot of wildfires unless u wanna get burned do not go .... come to frisco instead

I live in Oceanside, CA. It's on the coast about 40 minutes north of San Diego and 2 Hours south of LA. Its really paceful and perfect weather. Also we have excellent public transportation, city buses go everywhere, we have the sprinters, which take you as far as the buses do except faster. And the metrolink will take you down into SD, so you can experience th city life without using all the gas it would take you to get down there, considering gas is over 4 dollars a gallon out here now. I hope this helps. Ive lived alot of places including VA, NJ, WA and various places in CA, and Oceanside still continues to be my favorite. If this is still too expensive, Go one city inland to VIsta, CA. Same public transportation but a little further inland, making average rent drop about 100-200 dollars. Good luck!
