Where to move in the U.S.?? |
Hi all,
So, we have decided we are ready for a change. We live in a suburb of Chicago and want to move somewhere that is not really hot & humid in the summer but more importantly not too cold in the winter. This winter really took me down!
I'd like to move someplace close to a major city, doesn't have to be as large as chicago. I love trees, hate cornfields.
Any suggestions would be fantastic! Thank-you! Additional Details Okay also like to get a decent house around the 200k. More than a standard lot. Right now we have a regular brick ranch on a standard city lot. I work from home so looking for something I can also hold my inventory, maybe a outbuilding such as a pole barn. My dream though is to convert a church for home/business. |

How about somewhere in North Carolina? It's a beautiful state, LOTs of pine trees, there are mountains and the beach and Raleigh is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. |

I live just outside Portland Oregon and it is gorgeous here! I have visited several states and just love Oregon for it's all around good fun. The summers can get hot but aren't humid. The winters can get cold but aren't midwest cold. Portland is a maximum of 2 hours away from the beach one way and the mountains the other way. We have great skiing, well kept beaches, rivers and lakes galore and plenty of outdoorsy things to do. The city itself is one of few that is backed up by green hills with a river through it (not like the one through Chicago).
There is something to do for everyone. Wineries, breweries, museums (art and children's), outdoor markets, seasonal activities just to name a few. I live in the city of Tualatin which is 15 minutes south of Portland on I-5 and the crime rate is very low. Even better areas are Wilsonville, Lake Oswego, or West Linn which have the charm of Inverness without the price! I grew up in the Bay Area and have no desire to move anywhere else.
They say it rains a lot here but the state is so gorgeous that the rain is welcoming. The summers are amazingly warm but not over powering (I've spent summers in Crystal Lake) and there aren't snow covered winters too often like you are used to.
Give it a thought it's great here!
EDIT: Just about 20 minutes outside the city there is plenty of land for pole barns (if they aren't already there) and it is pretty much the only place in the country you can buy anything for 200K that isn't in the midwest/south |

Try the Raleigh, NC, area. There are universities so they have all kinds of cultural activities. Housing prices are reasonable and they have good weather. |

It took me a while but now I have the perfect place--Hawaii!
Now you did in Hawaii, the cost of homes out west are way above your price range. Now I am thinking South East Kentucky. That might be a little pricey too. Maybe a little south of St. Louis. It gets pretty hard to avoid that corn, but the prices are better. The East coast and west coasts are more expensive. Central U. S. is you best bet then.
Warmer weather sounds good to me too. Leave a little room for another family, please. :-) |

Well, I'd say Dallas, but it gets pretty hot in the summer. Not really humid, except in the spring. Dallas is a pretty hoppin' place, and if you like downtown music bars, there are plenty. Deep Ellum and the West End are great places to hang. Our suburbs are beautiful (far north Dallas, Plano, etc.), and there are many things to keep you occupied. The cost of living is really manageable as well, and there seems to be no dearth of jobs if you have a specialty. Or even if you don't.
The winters are really mild; we may have a snow or two in the colder ones (and by snow I mean: maybe an inch or two, tops.) Or not. If you decide on Dallas, we bid you welcome!! Folks down here are friendly and are quick with a drink and a place to stay or just a glass of iced tea for those who thirst. |

I vote for California, maybe Salinas or Monterey for the beach.
The summer in Salinas is not as hot as Chicago. |

I don't really know of a place that has wonderful, cool summers and a mild winter..........
I would say somewhere in New England. Nice, green, summers are great, but the winter could be bad.
I would also suggest you look into what your beliefs are. Rep or Dem? Liberal or Conservative?... Religious or Agnostic? |

Riverside, CA is where I am from. The market is actually really good for those who have money to buy because so many brand new houses have been repo'ed that you can get a 3,000 sq foot brand new home in my city which is normally 500,000 for about 180,000 at auction. I live next to a great lake with fishing, race track, motor cross. We are an hour from Los Angeles and an Hour from Oceanside. An hour from disneyland..So basically we are smack dab in the middle..
It gets about 102 degree's during the summer but I love it and the lowest for winter is about 32 degrees. It only snowed here ONCE in the last three years and that was for about an hour and that was it. |
