Where would be a good city to move to in Texas?

I'm a contractor and looking for a place that has a lot of building going on. It doesn't have to be in the same exact city. It could be a suburb with nice housing. I'm not that familar with Texas, but I'd really like to move and it's a state I am considering. California is not the place to live any longer and a lot of people I know have moved.

Austin is a great, booming city. Work is available, and that's what you want. Great school, especially if you live in the "burbs", like Round Rock. Affordable housing (as compare with most of CA), and reasonable climate. Check out classified on line by searching Austin American Statesman (local paper), and you can see the jobs, housing, etc.

Austin is a growing city that right now still has a lot of new housing going on, not just in the city, but in the surrounding areas and suburbs as well.

Below is a chart from CNN in July 2007 that lists the top 10 growing cities. You can see that Austin isn't the only city in Texas that is growing rapidly, San Antonio and Fort Worth are as well. However, is you ask anyone, Austin is the best place to live in Texas!

Top 10 fastest growing large cities
The sun belt dominates the list of fastest growing cities.
City (pop. over 500,000) State Population Percent growth
Ft. Worth TX 653,320 4.8%
Phoenix AZ 1,512,986 2.9%
Austin TX 709,893 2.7%
San Antonio TX 1,296,682 2.6%
Charlotte NC 630,478 2.3%
Albuquerque NM 504,949 2.1%
El Paso TX 609,415 1.9%
San Jose CA 929,936 1.6%
Denver CO 566,974 1.5%
Jacksonville FL 794,555 1.5%

i think you would like Austin, its real green and pretty and it kinda reminds me of San Luis Obispo County ca. but it will never be that place, that place is the jewel of california. so good luck!

Here are some that aren't extremely large cities but that may be doing well in the construction areas. These cities have between 100,000 to 200,000 people and are generally good in the housing/family environment. I have listed them in no particular order. I'm sure there are many more, but these are the ones that come to mind. The following web site might help: http://www.texas.gov

Abilene, Amarillo, Midland/Odessa, Waco

I lived in Dallas for many years. It's got a strong economy, a lot of growth, and it's a great place to live.

Try the Buda/Kyle area just south of Austin.
The area's growing super-fast, tons of new subdivisions and buildings going up all the time. It's a really nice area, great for families. There's an excellent school system, an affordable housing all over.
If you're a building contractor, PERFECT right around here.
Good luck!

What about Crawford Texas? If it is enough to attract a president
he must know something we don't. And I would surly check it out. But I am kinda Like a big city gal, so Dallas would be my choice. I just love having a lot of people around. But since you are into Building you have an open Field. But best of Luck and hope you make the big bucks, but on the whole you will find Texas a friendly State .So here to a slew of new friends also.

No where if your smart. I have lived in Texas all my life and am moving out in the Spring. The wages are aweful, cost of living is rising, polution and crime are bad. I am a truck driver for the USPS. I have been a driver for 23 years. The wages I'm making now are still $5.00 less an hour than what the same position pays as a starting wage in several other parts of the country. I don't know what type of contractor you are but with the real estate problems in the country building of houses has just about stopped here.

I live in a small town in welch and we go to lubbock all the time and they are always building houses and building for work. Its a pretty nice place and its not the biggest city but its a pretty good size.

FoeShiz
Sherman, Tx. North of Dallas..or anywhere in Denison or surrounding. Becoming very populas, therefore new building is required.
