Which Las Vegas hotel is better - the Orleans or the Palms?

I'm planning a trip to LV but can't decide on which of these two hotels to stay at, the Orleans or the Palms.

I know the Orleans requires a short drive to get to the main strip however I've heard they offer free shuttle services.

I'd like to stay somewhere that's central and convenient but a hotel that offers generous ammentities and nightlife is also integral.

If you've stayed at any of these hotels can you please give me both positive and negative feedback...

Or which you would prefer?

Thanks
Additional Details
BTW - a friend is hooking me up with free accomodation for 9 days at only one of these hotels, that's why I can't really branch out and consider other hotels. Thanks

The Orleans is one of my favorites and it's generally a much better value than the Palms. But, since your stay is free, by all means go with the Palms..

The Orleans is very nice, and anyone that says otherwise has no clue**
http://www.orleanscasino.com/things-to-do
Tripadvisor.com has ranked the Orleans as high as the #2 best value hotel in the WORLD.
Also >check the approval rating on Hotels.com the Orleans had a 93% approval rating the last time I checked.

**The "old dump" opened in 1996, they remodeled and built a new tower since....

The difference is the Orleans is a very nice 3 star hotel and the Palms is a very nice 4 star....

Palms:
Rooms - very nice
Nightclubs - as good as it gets
Buffet - average+
Casino - Very nice - but a little cramped
Video Poker - Great
Slot club/marketing - Not a casino for the low roller, if you're expecting comps for your play.
Restaurants - No experience in this area

Orleans
Rooms - nice(large)
Nightclubs - does a hockey team count (?)
Buffet - great value
Casino - nice - very open - the cocktail waitresses are far and away the hottest in LV
Video Poker - Not so good anymore, 10/7 DB(.25c) is the best game offered...
Slot club/marketing - If you stay & play anything at all, you can expect to receive discount room offers.
Restaurants - For the $$ it's hard to beat the Prime Rib Loft - The Courtyard Cafe is one of my favorites for breakfast.....

The Palms is "around" one mile West of the strip on Flamingo, the Orleans is a little over 1 mile West of the strip on Tropicana. Distance from the strip is not a major difference, even though the Palms is closer to the "center" of the strip.

Las Vegas - free hotel shuttles - schedules
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/transportation.cfm
The Palms has a free shuttle, as does the Rio & Gold Coast. The GC is right across the street from the Palms and the Rio sits East of and adjacent to the GC, it's an easy walk from the Rio to the Palms, so you can catch any of the 3....

We go to LV 2-3 times a year for 2 weeks or more at a time and have for over 20 years. We have stayed at the Orleans for at least a week or two every year since they opened(12 nights later this month). We have only stayed at the Palms one time for two nights, but we stay at the Gold Coast which is right across the street, so we do spend some time at the Palms(VP mostly)

It depends on what you're looking for. The Palms tends to cater to a younger, hipster crowd and is a big celeb haunt. The Orleans is more of a locals'-type casino. Personally, I'd view both hotels' websites and see which one offers more to your liking. The Palms does have some top-notch clubs...

Orleans is a nice hotel for old ladies, off the strip
Palms is a nice hotel for young people who like to party, off the strip

I think the best cost and location wise is the MGM Grand.

The Orleans is more of a "locals" hotel. It's way off the Strip, not close to anything else. Not a real "touristy" hotel.

The Palms is just off the Strip. It's a George Maloof hotel. Very young at heart, with lots of hot spots i.e. Ghostbar, Alize, N9ne Steakhouse. You will see celebrities at this hotel! I've stayed there, too, for an office Christmas party, overnight because of the boozing. It's a great hotel.

My vote: Palms.

I stayed at the orleans...The free shuttle drops you off at bill's gambling hall so if you aren't planning on going anywhere close to there then you will have to take a taxi anyway. A taxi ride to the strip was always almost 20 bucks w/tip one way... But the orleans is nice.

I go to Vegas a good bit and I would most certainly choose the Palms over Orleans. The Palms is actually my favorite hotel in Vegas.

Neither are directly on the strip but both are a very quick cab or shuttle ride away. The Palms (along with almost every major casino) offers shuttle services to and from other casinos. I recomend a cab over a shuttle(cleaner, quicker, and more comfortable) To get a cab you have to stand in a line outside of the casino. There is usually a short wait at night; but when alone it is a good chance to look for a single person or a group of just 2 or 3 and ask them where they are headed to if it is close to your destination ask them if they want to split the fare with you. But of course always use common sense when dealing with strangers in a place like vegas.

Both hotels have very nice rooms, but generaly the palms rooms are nicer. As far as restaurants, casino, pools, ammenities, etc. the Palms is much better, & has a lot more variety. As far as nightlife goes the Palms is one of the hottest places to party on the strip. They have bars & clubs that range from mild to wild. It is just a very plush hotel & casino. But it is true that the Palms caters to a younger crowd usually 21-35 or 40. The Orleans is going to be more like 40-80. It is a much more "tame" resort compared to the Palms

But check out the websites, they are usually pretty informative.

no go w/ the mirage or bellagio.

Palms, hands down.

Go with the Palms. The orleans has been around for so long it is considered a popular place for seniors. I rarely ever see any young people there.

I WOULD DEFINTATLY GO TOO THE LAS VAGAS HOTEL IF I WAS YOU ITS JUST BETTER IN MY OPINION.

Chris A
Orleans is a dump - it's cheap and old and dirty, and is filled with cheap, old, dirty people.

Palms is nice and sexy and fun, and is filled with nice, sexy, fun people.

For nightlife, Orleans has a movie theater, a bowling alley, and a hockey arena.

Palms has 4 high-end nightclubs and a major concert venue.

If you choose Orleans you are crazy.

hay get ride no Orleans .. have a good party.. enjoy dude.

definatley the Orleans...all the way
i loved it

have fun in Vegas!

Neither of these are on the Strip both are a trek away.

Palms beats Orleans hands down anyone not by a little bit its like the difference between Bellagio and Excalibur all you have to do is look at the clubs and what is hosted where.

I have not stayed at Orleans (nro would I) I have been told that the rooms are nice for the money but for me the casino is horrible its juts not Vegas where as even though it is off strip Palms is Vegas
