Wow ... tough question. Taking the metropolitan areas into question makes it even more difficult.
** Housing / cost of living is high for both (tie)
** Crime: although you've high crime in areas of D.C. and Baltimore, you've got some equally rough neighborhoods in San Franciso and Oakland. Both cities suffer staggering homeless populations. (tie)
** Restaurants (a "win" for San Francisco)
** Culture ( another tie, but titling towards San Francisco; both have world-class museums and classical arts but San Francisco's long term embrace of alternative culture -- beat, punk, rock music, electronics and multi-media arts -- give it an edge, albeit Dischord and the Sonic Circuits festival continues to push in the District's favor)
** Location, Location, Location (tie; D.C. for its proximity to NYC and access to 3 major airports ... and San Francisco for being close to California wine country and Russian River)
** Traffic (slight "win" for SF CA; BART and MUNI are much better than WMATA/Metro ... but ever try to PARK in San Francisco?!?! Fergetaboutit! The City has more vehicles than allotted parking spaces?!?!)
** Home is where the heart is ... ("win" for D.C.)
So, taking into account the fears of terrorist attacks or earthquakes ... I'd love to visit San Francisco more often but still choose the District as home. |

Washington DC. Much cleaner and a lot funner to go and see. There's a lot of historical stuff as well as fun stuff. Just better then San Francisco. |

I would have to say San Fran. The weather is better, find the people to be much nicer. I think the beach areas are much better on the westcoast than the eastcoast. |

I've never been to S.F. .......but I find it hard to imagine it's not better than D.C.
Last summer I stayed in The George hotel, a block from the capitol building. Have to step over homeless people to get to the door, literally. DC is a hole, it's a disgrace to democracy and capitalism. It showed me how really messed up we are as a country and as a people. |

never been to SF....but DC is not my fav. place to be. A bit on the dirty side and the I really don't feel safe in the public transportation system, (which is really the only way to get around there). SF has go to be better. |

I was born and raised in the mid atlantic area. No way I'd live in San Francisco. For all they do to show diversity it's all about white folks....gay white folks there. The culture gets real boring very very soon. But in the D.C. area there's New York, Philly and Atlanta. |

Well,
I live in DC, and have visited San Fran multiple times. I like San Fran better actually. The weather is great and the area is just more laid back! DC is full of a bunch of pompous pretensious pr1ck$!!!! |

I've never been to San Francisco, but i've been to D.C.
And I personally think that D.C. is all about working and there isn't much to do for fun. |

San Francisco is the most scenic city in America. And it has beaches. Also, very nice people (liberal). Washington, DC is a crime ridden city, riddled with politicians and bureacrats. |
