Which is the better city if you like the beach, in July? New York or Los Angeles?

Probably would not do much surfing.
Additional Details
Maybe you'all are right. But... according to what I have read, the Pacific is colder than the Atlantic. I truly believe that the water off Long Island would be a few degrees, maybe 5 degrees warmer than at say Laguna Beach in July.

I kind of always like Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, or Nantucket in July. But if you really want to come to California, go to Dana Point or San Clemente.

alwaysmoose
Ick neither. Oregon has several hundred miles of beach to be enjoyed by everyone.

Paris Hilton
Well since you are such a puss when it comes to water temperature why don't you go to Caribbean, It is definitely warmer there...

According to the National Oceanographic Data Center, its a toss up. They show the average beach water temperature in New York (The Battery) in July - 73 and Newport Beach, Los Angeles - 69

The air temperature in Los Angles is higher, and the beaches are (usually) cleaner, so I would say Los Angeles out of the two choices you gave.

However, neither have the really best beaches. Those can only be found in Hawaii, with a close second in Florida.

I live int he Northeast and I'm going to have to say L.A., the Pacific water is much warmer. Even though it is July the Atlantic is colder no matter what time of year it is.

Los Angeles or Orange County definitely. I'm a "past" eastern gal, and have been living in California for 22 years now. The beach is prettier here, the water is definitely bluer, and the water is nice in the end of July-ish!! Even my golden retriever loves the water at that time. The water in the east is grayer, the water in Ca. is bluer.
