Kauai - The most beautiful place in the world. Quiet, laid-back. Seemed more "traditional". Water seemed warmer.
Maui - More built up (but NOT over-commercialized). More shopping and dining in confined area. Beaches seemed more crowded.
Stayed at the Marriott both places. Kauai was a nicer resort.
Luau was good on Maui.

Depending on the amount of time - I would stay at more than one island but if I could only go to 1 -Kauai.

I am jealous!

MAUI!!!! by far. Do the bike ride down Haleakala. My bride and I did it twice.
Hana, you have to do the road to Hana and spend the night in Hana. Get a CD in Paie town, tour the town first, stop at Mama's Fish House for lunch, dinner cost a lot. Start your tour, you'll find a lot of good places in Hana. The Hana Maui is very pricey. Once on the Hana side stop at the Seven Sacred Pools and Lindbergh's grave site.
Don't fear you can drive any car around the island. We've done it four times. You'll end up in Up-Country. Not bad, very good views.
I like Kihei stay at the Kamaole Sands.
Everyone has to see Lahina once, very touristy. You'll love the town down by the water front, matter of fact it's Front Street.
If you scuba dive you have to dive Lanai and the sites there, use the Maui Express Boat vendor you can find them on line and get a cheaper price vs. a dive shop. For Molikini use J. Robinson.
If this is your first trip and you decide on Maui. Make sure you do the Old Lahina Town Lua. You have to make reservations a couple of months in advance. They are on-line. You will not be disappointed.
There is a lot to see on any of the islands. So at the Airport pick-up a Maui Gold Guide it will help you a lot. Aloha and Ma-halo

Maui!
When My Clients want to go to Hawaii, they always seem to want Maui.
It's the best Island of the Hawaii Islands.
Have never had any bad feedback on Maui either.

For nightlife and activity I would pick Maui. For relaxation I would pick Kauai.

Enjoy

Kauai is very beautiful but I think there would be more for you to do in Maui. Maui is my favourite island, and I think that Kaanapali would be a good place for you to stay for your age group a short distance from Lahaina. You have the beautiful scenery you want plus a lot of things to see and do as mentioned above.

Holly crap.

I guess majority rules then.

I'm from Maui, still am here so you know my answer.

Maui is fun, but most of the island is old folks, we were at Waialea area. Go to Lahaina in Maui to find the 20s crowd, those nights were fun.

Road to Hana is a tourist trap. Only liked the waterfall at the beginning and the black sand beach, all else was a waste of time and an accident waiting to happen.

Go snorkeling and kayaking. Bring a wintercoat to go see the sunrise on the volcano one morning.

Maui. Maui is very relaxed. Great snorkeling. If you have never been to Hana you must go. And you can surf, hike, parasail, shopping, etc. They have everything there. Make sure you go to Hana.

I've been to Maui. Its very nice. Beautiful scenery. Very nice drive over to Hana. Waterfalls. A volcano that you can bike ride down from the top. etc. But why not get a guidebook and see what some objective author says.

Kauai
A friend of mine worked on a cruise ship over there and she said that was the best island to visit, but make sure you visit the black sands beach, it has been growing since 1985 and they say it fall off into the ocean, so see it while its there.

When you are there you can always hop around on the islands to visit it all.

I am fond of Kauai... but if you want night life, jet skis and great luaus Kauai is not the place for you.

If you want beautiful beaches great hikes in the tropics and in the canyon, Kauai is the place for you
